Ok, i said it before and I'll say it again. I do not want Fulmer back. I think it would be a backwards step. But, since you brought it up and you did, here were my concerns during that fateful '08 season:
1. Firing fulmer, we lose UT identity with coaches and we won't ever get it back: Check
2. Firing fulmer, we bring in a staff that, if successful, gone in 3 years: Check
3. Firing fulmer, we bring in a staff that, if not successfull, gone in 3 years: NA
4. Firing fulmer, UT becomes a professional-like team with tradition and fan base taking a back seat to big contracts, big money, can't afford seats, higher fan apathy: Check
Still, I got on the Lane train. I like anybody in orange. And I like Dooley, a lot more. As an alumni of UT, I have huge loyalty to whomever is in charge. I would have still liked to have kept it "in the family" as majors and Fulmer were both orange-blooded as it gets. I think that mindset along with winning makes for a very successful program. Otherwise, we're like Miami Hurricanes of the 80's. Win a lot but a dismal fan base and big apathy when not winning. That is not what UT is about, I believe. I believe that the coaching staff should embrace our program, understand and be adamant about the tradition, not just the volwalk and the maxims but understanding the overall program and living and dying orange. Mainly, I do not want a coach, no matter how good, to use UT as a stepping stone to another college program or NFL. I would rather have a coach who gets it than a coach who doesn't. I think the program sells itself and we will be generally successful. Whether or not we would have won another national championship in the next five years with Fulmer or Kiffin or anybody, we'll never know.
That's about it.
