A long post to follow as I research like mad.
Vanderbilt is now #1 RPI and we KNOW they are not the best team in the nation.
Tennessee is up to #12 (1 spot behind Alabama who has a worse record and 1-3 against the Vols)
However, the Vols are only 9 RPI points behind Alabama for 11th, 17 points behind Coastal Carolina for 10th and 25 points behind Clemson for 9th.
CCU plays the winner of ULL/Marshall tomorrow. ULL is #129 and MU is 107 so with a win, The Vols should be able to grab #10 and sew up a top-16 hosting spot.
Clemson plays NC State (#33) tomorrow.. Win or lose, I don't think the Vols can get to 9 unless they win the tourney.
HOWEVER, the tournament committee will likely be looking for every reason to limit SEC hosting spots.
With six SEC teams as solid top 8 seeds and the ACC and Big12 limping into the postseason, the committee will be beating every midwestern, Yankee, and left coast bush to find anyone with a pulse to host a regional.
The committee will be hoping against hope on Thursday that:
(1) GaTech beats Cal
(2) UCLA beats Michigan
(3) TCU beats TBD
(4) USM beats ODU
(5) Clemson beats NC State
(6) Coastal Carolina beats Marshall (who is up 5-0 over ULL)
the lowest hanging fruit (in order)
Georgia Tech
TCU
Southern Miss
UCLA
Florida State
SUNBELT:
Will the committee allot two hosting spots to the 9th best Div-1 conference? For reference, the SoCon is 7th
Southern Miss is the wildcard this week as DI has really been pumping them up. USM is only RPI #21 and are getting a lot of recent pub in winning a lot of games in a mediocre conference.
The Vols have a better record and a far better SOS over USM.
I think the Fightin' Applebees need Coastal Carolina to keep winning this week and make the tourney final so they don't take an RPI hit. They will take a hit tomorrow (win or lose) as ODU upset Troy. Old Dominion is #103.
Can the committee give a hosting spot to a team that lost a series to Marshall and has five Quad 4 losses?
If USM does not make the conference tourney finals in a two-team league, then I don't see them getting a bid.
ACC:
* The ACC is the #2 ranked conference but there is a HUGE gap between #1 and #2
* It appears the only top 8 ACC school is UNC who play their first ACC tourney game tomorrow.
* Clemson, Ga Tech and FSU are projected top-16. Only Clemson seems like a lock with a top 10 RPI.
* Tech is the ACC season champ. That is really the only thing working for them. They also lost a series to Marshall but lost to them at home! Ugh! The Jackets' only quality series win is at Duke (last weekend) and they were shelled at Miami. The Jackets start ACC play tomorrow against Cal. The committee is traditionally a sucker for a coach on a retirement tour.
* FSU plays their first tourney game on Friday Friday against Duke (in Durham) Not sure Duke will have a homefield advantage even in Durham as their fans suck
I don't think the committee traditionally likes FSU.
* NC State, Duke, Wake, and Louisville are projected 2 seeds but they are too far back in RPI to move into hosting position.
* If Tech loses to Cal, the ACC only gets three hosts.
BIG 12:
* West Virginia going 1 for Kansas the last two weekends ended their chance to host as they dropped to RPI #27. Even as the conference champ.
* TCU is RPI #18 and did not play WVU and finished 3rd in conference. With #94 Houston apparednt upset of K-State, their RPI will take a hit tomorrow win or lose
* Kansas is RPI #23 and finished 2nd - I'm not even sure they have facilities - or desire to host. They are actually not ranked and would need to win Big12 tourney to have a shot. I hope they like Fayetteville.
* Arizona and Arizona State are simply too far behind to get bids unless there's funny business in the committee room
Big10:
What a surprise as the new west coast teams sit on top of the standings. Four of the top five were not conference members in 2024.
* Oregon has a top-16 locked up . Can they hold onto a top-8?
* UCLA could get a top-16 with a win tomorrow and definitely an appearance in the Semis. And the committee would KILL A MAN to create two west coast regionals.
With stadium construction and a bad final month, I think Tennessee must win on Thursday to host.
With a win tomorrow and Friday, I think the Vols can get a host spot and start getting high enough to be paired against a non-SEC team in Super Regional play. (UNC or Oregon) with an above average chance to hose Supers against an SEC or ACC team upsetting either of those teams.
