The Official 2nd Amendment Appreciation Thread

Probably not going to happen, but it does so happen that we train the Harris County (TX) Sheriff's Office Marine Unit. Just so you know, you've got some of the best boat operators out there that I've ever seen, and their unit commander is top notch. If I had to go back to the field, and had my choice of where, it would be in Harris County.

FYI, true story: last July, I got ejected from a boat during pursuit training. Chine dig at roughly 35 knots. Violent ejection and water entry. There was a Harris County deputy on my crew. He wasn't driving, and not his fault. Tore me up pretty good. Over 6 months to fully recover, and range of motion in my right shoulder will never be the same. A week later, I walk into the classroom with my arm in a sling and what would prove to be a permanent limp. And my HCSO guys (there were 3 of them in the class) present me with a set of wings from the HCSO Aviation Unit. Priceless. I love those guys. Those wings are on my impact vest (which kept it from being a lot worse) to this day.

But if I ever get out that way, I'll take you up on the offer. I've heard Texas BBQ rivals anything we're doing down here in SEC territory.

Said it before, but I've learned a lot here. Good thread. Great posters. Keep it up.

Go Vols.

I like bbq pork from back home the best but Texans do a great job w brisket.

Really cool story. You should be proud.

If you come here and shoot with me, you’ll leave with a smile that can’t be wiped off. Guaranteed.

Bring a clean shirt and a $10 bill. You won’t change either one.

GV, I did some online reading-up today, and I think I'm with you on lubing an AR. Mobil1 10W-30 for the moving parts. There's a movement out there, and it's mainly the pros.

So...CLP for cleaning, or Hoppe's, or something else? I already know to buy brake cleaner instead of "Gun Scrubber".

And run it wet. I think it was you who said "it will spit out anything it don't need."

Have a Real Avid cleaning kit, but ordered an Otis. Breech to muzzle is apparently the way to go. Already have a BoreSnake for quick cleanups, and the standard MilSpec M16 kit.

Yes...I'm down to trying to pick the right solvent / lube.

I've been using synthetic motor oil for years and it's worked fine. As for cleaning, I've gotten past the "OMG! OMG! Must be bare metal!" cleaning philosophy when it comes to firearms. Basically, I learned over time that's nothing more than ignorant arms room workers and people with nothing better to do with their time than nitpick. Got into it on more than one occasion with some little turd with six months in the military that tried to tell me "clean it dry."

In short, the military tends to be idiots about such things. Since retiring, I've gotten more easygoing in that thought process. It doesn't have to be clean enough to eat dinner off of. Just clean enough to continue working.

Anyway, I generally do a good wipe down and brushing if needed to break up the most offending spots. If required for a "deep cleaning" to remove the built up gunk, I tend to use Windex. Crazy, I know, but it works. Once you get past that "break in" period where the Parkerization wears down, cleaning becomes far easier. Now, I do keep a can of Break-Free around to take off the minor spots of corrosion and let it soak through tough carbon build up, but overall, I don't worry as much about making it factory clean.

Manic cleaning can also negatively affect accuracy. Any military platform weapon was designed to be abused. So really your optimal operating conditions occurs with some fouling and nominal buildup because your results will be more consistent. Some guys obsess over detail stripping their M1’s or carbines after every shooting. The guys that shoot matches know taking a weapon apart every time you shoot means you have to settle in that gun again for the next match. They probably do a detail strip at the end of the season and that’s it. I think you should be able to disassemble your firearms and rebuild them, but I don’t think that’s something that needs to happen every time you shoot. Brake cleaner, bore snake, CLP, done.

Very nice pistol.
Thank you. I do have to report that the orange circle around the tritium sight has fallen off at around 1500 rounds. Then the tritium vial started moving around loosely, grrr crappy ameriglo sights! That’s okay, gonna install a gold bead sight anyway. Other than the sight issue, it’s been 100% function wise.

Berettas are highly useful pistols.

I think the USS Nimitz has a few it uses for anchors.

Sounds like someone is missing their M9 from back in the day.

Gotta go with GV on this one. Carried the 1911 for years. In...94?...we transitioned to the Beretta. Loved how the 9mm shot; hated the round. Went from a 230gr hardball that had knockdown power to a 115gr hardball that...well...sucked. I was on a military SRT when that happened, and we all but stopped doing transition drills. No point moving from an MP5N where we could carry the 147gr JHP to the M9, where we could not. Government wisdom...gotta love it.

Beretta makes some really nice guns, and you can turn the 92 into a good HD gun, but you have to do it with the right ammo. Which leads me back to why I do, and always will, prefer the .45 as a personal choice. It matters not what I send down the barrel. It will change your day, and all I have to do is hit you with it. With a 9mm, round choice and shot placement are very important. Then again, when is shot placement not important?

You can quote gel tests all day long. I've been at two OIS's where the .45 was used, and in both cases the bad guy was beyond benefit of medical attention when I arrived. Nothing against the 9mm; ammo improvement has closed the gap. It's a good round, if you pick the right one, and the 9mm is easy to shoot accurately. So it has its' advantages, as does the .45.

Matter of personal preference, I guess. I don't need 15 rounds if the first 3 do the job, right?

Y'all keep 'em straight out there.....

This thread is too quiet. Are we all broke?

I need a 55 grain, JSP round, roughly 3100 FPS, barrier-blind, sub-MOA, expands to .30 or better at 12 inches in gel, retains 125% of it's weight, and lethal out to around 400 yards.

Oh...for around .30 per round.

Any ideas?

I think Chuck Norris handloads some stuff like that but only for his personal friends.

Ya shoot any this weekend?

Nope. Got everything dialed-in; guns cleaned; and ammo stock right where I want it. I'm afraid to touch anything...ha ha ha.

Busy weekend. Yard work; went through my Hurricane Kit; and then flipping back and forth between the UT and UGA games. Church on Sunday (both services; I'm on the Security Team), and at that point Wautash really needed a nap.

GV: Thanks for the info on the Black Hills round. I might try a box. I have 500 rounds of the 62gr TAP (not sure when or how that happened), which I will try out just to see where it hits. I'm pretty much on the 69gr IMI for longer range, Federal 62gr JSP for duty, and 55gr TAP for in-home...and then a truckload of 55gr FMJ for GP. Like I said before, that box of Hornady Black 62gr FMJ I bought didn't do anything that what I already have doesn't do as well, or better. But I'll likely try the Black Hills just to see.

I think, for me, having an AR that with my chosen ammo puts me right at 1-2 MOA under realistic conditions is probably about as good as it gets. So I'm content, for now. But if UnicornArms. com gets that ammo back in stock, I'm all over it.

As always, thanks for the solid advice and good info.
