The Official 2nd Amendment Appreciation Thread

Picked up a High Point JHP .45 ACP at Academy. It’s ugly and heavy, but all the reviews on it are favorable and for less than $200 it comes with a transferable lifetime warranty.

Ugh now you really are going to shoot your eye out.

Carry a 9mm S&W Shield but I just don’t like it. I have only put 50-100 rounds through it. Just ergonomically not my gun. I have a Glock 17 and 19 plus a 9mm glock Mag lower for another AR build. I do not have a Glock 26 or smaller though. I have a lot of Glock/glock type Mags and extended mags in 9mm.

My wife carries a Springfield XD9 compact. She got because of the backstrap safety and we have younger kids. It feels alright/fine.

My H&K VP 9 is the best “feeling” pistol I have shot but the Gen 4 glock beaver tails help a lot. Those VP9 sights though are just Heaven to my cross eye dominant open eye shooting.

So going to trade my Shield. Should I get:

1. VP 9 SK

2. Compact Glock 9 (Glock 26 or 43) because I am “okay” with the grip and can put up with sights but have tons of Glock mags and interchangeablility (I am a semi SHTF or TEOTWAWKI kind of guy)

3. Springfield XD9 c like my wife so if we are together and only one of us has our gun (happens a lot) we both know how to shoot it well.

Side note, she hates a Glock feel in her hand. I tried to go that way with both of us originally and she would have none of it. She does love the full size VP9 and calls it “hers” anyways

Apologies for not seeing this.

However, standard canned answer of "what you feel most comfortable with." I spent 20 years in the .mil shooting a Beretta I hated. Now that I'm past that time, I shoot what feels, and in turn, I shoot the best. If you like the VP9, I'd say that's a can't lose situation for you to be in. On the other hand...

If you and the wife both like the VP9, you really don't have any other choice in the matter. When it comes down to it, most people shoot better with something they are more comfortable with. And if you both are liking the VP9, there really isn't an option period.

Go with the VP9 and don't look back.

Exactl GV, I love the shield, it’s what I carry, my wife loves her sig p238 so she carries it, I like it too but I would really like to try out the p938

I did want to touch on this. It's nice having interchangeable mags and whatnot, but I've never been hip to that particular theory of operations. I've always thought of firearms as tools. You have different hammers, right? You don't (shouldn't lol) use a slotted screwdriver on a Phillips head, correct?

Use the tool that's best suited for the application. And that includes caliber as well. Personally? I'm not a huge fan of anything larger than 9mm for a "pocket pistol" or a CCW. Reason? Anything larger than that tends to beat up the hands pretty good. But I love my .45 in the full size pistols.

But, no reason I can't have both, right? Use what works best and what is suited for the job at hand. If that means you have two calibers or two entirely different platforms, that means you have two calibers and different platforms. Use what "fits" you and the wife unit the best and, more importantly, what you can put metal on target best with.

Have you handled any of the Walthers like the PPQ or CCP? I can't say I've shot either but I've heard many people really like the ergos.

Why not carry the G19?

I am a physician. Surgeon/subspecialist. Wear scrubs a lot. Imprint size is too much. Going to have to go ankle holder anyways with scrubs as won’t hide in that waist. Fortunately my partners and I own our two buildings so I can carry there, just not into hospital, ccw permit or no.

I used to keep in truck or just carry when in dress clothes on my full clinic days. Been a few physicians shot in KY and a couple out west last few years because they refused to give some addicts opioids etc. Has got me a little concerned. Plus I would just prefer to carry more.

Appreciate it though.

Solid unbiased advice. Thanks man. May do it. Or go play with a VP9SK

We rented those at the range one day. I thought the PPQ was decent, liked it okay but didn’t real get me excited. I can’t remember exactly what it was though but either the slide punched my wife’s hand or the kick was too much for her and we moved on to the next rental trial.

I’ll prob shoot her XD9c some and then borrow or rent a VP9SK (it’s supposed to feel just like the full size though) and go with my best on those for feeing better/shooting better.

Thanks GrandVol.

ps I hope I like the XD9 as good or better because it is $200-300 cheaper than a VP9SK and if I get and SK my wife will make me get her one to and trade her XD I bet!! She always has expensive tastes in guns!!

You really are in a unique situation. Many shooters have spouses that give firearms a <sigh> and carry/shoot it because you nag. If your wife is into shooting, treat her with what she wants. If that means spending a bit more coin on a H&K for the both of you, I'd say go for it.

I'd steer her away from Wilson Combat though lol

Okay, Grey. What's the question?

Want to put a TLR-1s on my AR. I have the Colt 16" carbine w/collapsible stock. Got the Aimpoint PRO, Magpul backup sight, and Magpul 2 point.

Have to change front hand guard to mount light, so might as well free float.

Your suggestion(s) appreciated..

I'm a big proponent of Midwest Industries. Especially their one piece Free Float types. I'd suggest the 12 inch version (gives you enough rail for pretty much anything, but doesn't go to the muzzle) in the M-LOK pattern.

One Piece Free Float

Pop a five slot M-LOK rail for the light and you're good to go.

As for a gas block, I'd say any reputable manufacturer would be okay. The BCM I have worked great and went right on:

AR-15, M16, M4, Gas Blocks

Just as a reminder to get the .625 if you have the pencil barrel or .750 for the standard barrel.

And don't forget the flip up front sight!

Anyone familiar with assembling a 1903 hammerless pistol? I had a broken thumb safety that required stripping down the MSH and grip safety. I cannot get the hammer to catch the MSH tab end and fall into place correctly to reinsert the safety. Have tried looking on YouTube but most are simple field strips or not helpful. I’m sure there’s a trick but I’m not getting it.

CMP comes through again. New Garand arrived this week. Springfield Armory - production date May 1944. This one may have actually been in the hands of some brave soul in the Atlantic or Pacific. It's a true beauty.
