The "Official" 2008 Pick the VOLS Record Thread

From all the reports on the scrimmages and stuff, the front 7 have been a strong point.

you can't trust everything in those reports. If they could get efficiency from the 7 starters and not have to depend on reserves, then it would be a strong unit.

Unfortunately, reserves will have to play at least 50% of the time and that still won't keep starters in front 4 fresh enough to be efficient. LB's might can play 50% or more of the snaps but not starting front 4. They need to go as ahrd as possible in about 35-40% of snaps and have others take the rest.

they would also need for G Williams to get more snaps then other LBs...

Based on what I've seen, I don't have the same faith that the reports projected...

Knox, Here is something I jsut read from a report this morning. Possible playing 3 down lineman doesn't indicate a "strong point" IMO. we are down to last 10 days of practice and looking for a # 4 DT

Copied report from media:

Victor Thomas, whose ability to contribute became magnified following Nelson's injury, appears to have taken advantage of the added reps and expectations in practice. Fulmer just wants to see more of it.

"Victor's one of those guys who I'm looking for consistency from," said Fulmer, who noted Thomas had enjoyed a good week of practice. "He needs to be more consistent, more focused. Some of that just comes with time, but I'm not going to sit here and wait until he's a fourth-year junior or whatever to be mature. We're in his rear end every day and I expect him to grow up and I expect his peers to be in his rear end, too, because we need him.

"We need him and (Donald) Langley and (Andre) Mathis to be able to play some real snaps for us. But they're not going to play if they're not ready. We'll go to a three-down scheme and do something else. You hit a button."

that is not good IMO

Kinda ominous, but I value your opinions. Who do you see the losses to?

difficult to predict that. players get hurt and we can't know who won't play win for any of the teams. If we end up 8-4, that means we lose to Florida very likely. Have to beat Florida to get to a 10-2 record or better IMO. That game key to entire season but sure could beat them and still be 8-4.

best other guesses would Auburn / Georgia and then lose the 4th one to any of several.

I think the only games we can chalk up as definite wins are UCLA, UAB, N Ill Wyoming and UK. Anyone else can beat us on a given day and UCLA might fall in that category as well.. We can also, with right breaks and health, beat anyone on our schedule.

You just can't predict a key player going down. Crompton getting hurt for example would cripple us offensively. Same is true for UGA if Stafford went down.

I've already said several times, we could end up 10-2 and be third in the East. That is a very possible scenario also. Tough to make predictions

Well, here's hoping we can avoid injuries, specifically to Crompton and our DTs... and keep our offense on the field for extended drives in the fourth quarter. That would really help our cause.

You're around the program a good bit, sounds like. Do you see much change in the demeanor and/or attitude of Fulmer & Chavis this year compared to other seasons? I felt like chief was really getting worn down at times last year and wonder if his heart is still in it.

The staff seems as excited as I've seen them for some time. The new guys have brought a different kind of energy it seems. I was up there a few weeks ago and Chavis spoke to a group and sounded very intense (he is always intnese around fans) and more out-going then I have seen him in past. In past, I've had difficulty getting him to talk much but I spent a good 20 minutes talking to him this year. He seemed excited to me...he is no fan of internet. :dance2:

Cool, good stuff thanks. Not surprised about Chavis and the internet, he seems old school like that. But I'm glad to hear about the enthusiasm, there has been times I was worried some of our staff was just going through the motions on cruise control.

Can't survive on cruise control. I don't think they ever do that but can understand that perception Jack.

I was there a weekend in late July along with about 60 other fans. We spent weekend around coaches. They stayed on cell phones quite a bit talking to recruits and you could see the intensity.. The job has long hours and not jsut from September through December.. its all year.. jmo

9-3 lose to the obvious teams (UF, UGA, AU). My gut says it will be worse with a new QB, new OC, thin DL and other lingering questions, but I am chosing to keep my head in the clouds and remain optimistic on this pick.

9-3, with losses to UF, AU, and UGA. I originally had bama in the loss column too, but changed that after the whole media days fiasco.

Out of FLA/AUB/UGA, we win one. Out of Bama or USC, we lose one.

We lose an extra game somewhere along the way, or we lose an extra game among those five games, or something.

8-4 regular season. If I thought we could stop the run I'd feel better about it.

the ucla game is one of the most important games in resent history. If we can take care of business I think we will be 9-2 but if we lay an egg 7-4 or worse. I believe this team can be special but we've got to play well on the left coast

Hope I'm being pessimistic, but...

UCLA- W
UAB- W
Florida- L Not as bad as last year, still not a close game
Auburn- L Close game
N. Illinois- W
Georgia- L Not Close
Mississippi State- W
Alabama- L Heartbreaking loss, which leads to...
South Carolina- L Hangover effect
Wyoming- W
Vanderbilt- W
Kentucky- W

7-5

We'll end up beating Clemson in the Failed-To-Deliver Bowl (aka Music City bowl).

8-5

In 1899 Sewanee went 12-0 and outscored there opponents 322-10. The only team to score on them was Auburn coached by the John Heisman.

I predict that the vols miraculously perform exactly the same feat during the regular season, only team scoring on us all year will be Tuberville but since he's only getting 10 points it'll be okay. During the SECCG Eric Berry has 6 pick 6's and by the time comes for the BCS national championship for the first time in NCAA history the other team actually forfeits rather than show up because they simply fear us that much.

Of course if I were a glass is half empty person I'd say 10-2, with losses to Florida and Auburn. I'm not scared of Georgia or Bama.

Until he shows me otherwise, I'm going to be a believer in Jonathan Crompton. He played decently as a freshman 2 years ago when Ainge got hurt, and he's had 2 years to mature since then. I have no reason to expect he won't be able to get the job done. I think we will lose to either Florida or Auburn but not both. If we manage to beat Florida, I think the team will be primed for a letdown in a tough road game, and if the lose to Florida, they will come back strong in classic Fulmer style. Then I think we lose to Georgia as well, and then run the table, and play in the Capital One Bowl, or maybe have an outside chance at an at-large BCS berth.
