The Official #16 Tennessee @ Louisiana State Game Thread, 2:00 PM ET, ESPN

This team just is who we are at this point, but one thing is clear and that is our front court is abysmal and if Springer & Johnson both leave this off-season, it won’t even matter if Kennedy Chandler is an All-American. We won’t win many games with Fulkerson, ORN, Anosike, Pember, and Plavsic taking up 5 schollys next year.

Barnes biggest recruiting job this off-season will be to buy himself one more year with Springer and Johnson.

We are good and mix of old and young. I hope Springer and Johnson come back next year. We need a ball handler in a bad way. Pons and Fulkerson are so inconsistent. Oh well....maybe they will get hot for the tourney.

Both are looking at being picked in the top half of the draft. It would be very dumb for them to come back.

I dont know that I'd call it an average SEC. Probably the 3rd best conference at worst, and better than it usually is. Dont let Kentucky not being good convince you the whole league isn't
However, 7-5 still is disappointing
You’re right, but the teams we’ve lost to is what makes it sad. Blown out by a depleted Florida team, Ole miss, and now a blowout loss to LSU. I could live with losses to Alabama and Missouri, those are two good teams. Those other 3 are quite ugly though.

There is no chance Johnson comes back. He’s likely a lottery pick.

They re very different situations. Wade had some success with his blatant rule breaking and to my knowledge hadn't made any enemies at LSU.

Pruitt on the other hand had a terrible season and had pissed off at least a few people he needed on his side. Honestly, without that he's probably still the coach.
Pearl had broken a minor rule and got caught lying about it and to my knowledge did not have any enemies @ UT & the AD chose to not even consider fighting for their coach. I will go out on a limb and say that even if Pruitt had a .500 record this year and had not made any enemies @ UT the results would remain unchanged, those results being that the UTAD would bend over and take whatever the NCAA was giving . Now somewhere in the near future the AA may hammer LSU & Wade but the point I was making in my original statement is that currently the UTAD is no better or worse than LSU in cooperating with the AA -vs- telling them to get bent . I guess only time will tell.

I get what your saying and maybe I'm too naive or too idealistic but cheating to win defeats the purpose of playing a game. If you cheat you really didn't win.
That's the reality of major college athletics. I understand your point as well though and agree to some extent. I think the money part has corrupted it a little too much. The simple fact is they are quasi-professional. If they weren't and were simple college athletics we'd probably care as much as the average person does about the swim team.

Barnes took an unknown roster and turned it into a "Sweet 16" team......unfortunately, lost a close one before we got there. I don't hang that on Barnes or the players. Just seems like the Tournament can cause some disappointments for a lot of teams. That was a fun team to watch...Didn't we win 30 games or so? Hard to dismiss that team or coach as a failure for me over one game.......
We don't have a Schofield and Williams.

Good for them. Good for our program in the long run. Bad for this team in the short term. I would hate to bring a talent like Kennedy Chandler in to be on an average team next season, but it’s certainly looking that way. We’ve kind of swung and missed on the transfer market as of late, and outside of Vescovi and JJJ there won’t be a lot of returning talent to the roster.

Fulkerson is a SR. He can‘t play next year can he ?

I'm preparing myself for that scenario. I fully expect our team next year to be similar to the Ben Simmons LSU team. One top player a few good ones and then a whole lot of meh.

Be thankful we have a coach that can land players like Kennedy Chandler.

Well, we do have Mashack coming in as well, but he's that typical guy Barnes likes. 6'5" guy who defends with intensity. Not so great of a ball handler or shooter. We have got to get a post and add some shooters to this team. And those come only after we clear out the dead weight on this roster. There are guys who just cannot play at this level. They've gotta go.

Barnes infamous “year off” in recruiting is going to take a few years to fix. It’s okay to have one-and-done players, heck we all thought these two meant an E8 or F4 this year. But, when you have an entire recruiting class of Gaines, Pember, ORN, and mid-year enrollee Vescovi you have 3 guys soaking up scholarships that don’t seem like they’ll ever be much of a contributor. Combine those 3 with losing Pons and likely the 2 freshmen, it makes for a rough season in the interim until we can overhaul.

I might get crushed for saying this but we have 4 dead weight scholarships on this team right now—-Anosike, ORN, Pember, and Gaines. I don’t see any of those guys doing much more than chewing clock and giving us a few fouls so you have literally a 3rd of your roster next year giving you nothing.

EDIT: Add Plavsic to that list. So really you have 5 “projects” on the team that aren’t showing much promise for having an eventual payoff.

Where did I say I wasn't? I can still be upset that we aren't going to be at the top, or do I need to settle my expectations?

I’m just accepting reality we won’t hire anybody better than Barnes.

The ones that are hollering for a change is wasting their time.

Barnes did a great job recruiting Banchero and Smith and just missed. The one mistake may have been not taking Cardwell last year.

But a great PG will keep you in many games, and we will have talent. I think they will go after a graduate big man and hope that Fulky returns healthy.

My question is with 2 of the top 10 players...why are we barely hanging on as a top 5 team in the SEC?

Banchero was paid. That’s not Barnes fault.

Smith was a miss, I’ll admit.

I would have been happy with Cardwell but he’s not a game changer.

I'd actually hope we could keep English as head coach when Barnes rides off into the sunset.
