The Official #11 Vandy @ #15 Tennessee Series Thread (Fri. 5/9 5:30PM EDT SEC Network) (Sat. 5/10 5PM EDT ESPN2) (Sun. 5/11 3PM EDT ESPN2)

Chapman makes that play 99 out of 100 times. As a junior, I ride with my veteran. Chapman earned the benefit of the doubt. Amick certainly received that benefit last year and Chapman shouod have received it yesterday IMHO.
Reese has been totally lost lately and his strikeout numbers on the year have been too high, as Tony alluded to two weeks ago. I agree with the need to re-set Chapman Sunday and give Grimmer a chance. Unfortunately, Blake had an off day, just as Chapman had early on in his career. Yes, he probably catches that ball, but Tony was trying to be proactive and provide a spark, so I totally agree with Tony here. I remember the same re-set with a kid named Hunter and it really set the stage for great things after that.

You don't just take pitches because you need to put the ball in play and make the defense make the play, this is college ball the pitcher is just as likely to throw it into the outfield as he is to make the play.

On top of that the situation in the game, at that point it was a lower scoring game where runs looked to be at a premium, at that point you're thinking 1 run wins the game.
Exactly put the ball in play. A better chance to hit a sac fly then get a bunt down and get tossed out at 1st and runner STILL left on 3rd. Since it wasn’t a squeeze. So I say again. Why a bunt with a .394 hitter? Not to mention the chance of a throw into the outfield from the pitcher, IF, he’s the one to make the throw. Is just the same chance he throws a passed ball.

39-12 👀
Winning a title last year spoiled this fanbase in a way I never imagined.
I will add to this...........

1st trip ever to the state of Tennessee was see a good friend of the family play some baseball and chose this series for a reason for my first game/s at LNS. Was greeted with none other than porch tickets for Friday nights game and maybe it was just the porch I was on but it was an absolute electric atmosphere, good food, good booze, lots of general rowdiness and cheering when needed in good times or bad. Absolutely loved it.

Then I was greeted Saturday morning with what I would consider my first ever full effect earthquake and that was interesting to say the least and after bouncing around town to take in some of the sites and sounds of the area we found our seats down the 1st base line and let me tell you that if it wasn't for the 10-12 people in our section yelling, standing and clapping in big pitching moments, certain at bats, stupid umpiring calls or just general Vandy razzing, that place could have been considered a mortuary. Absolutely blew me away that it seemed the general fan base had no idea what a big moment was, whether we were on the field or at bat. The scoreboard 100% dictated the seated crowds mood. I know this wasn't the case for all in attendance but damn we couldn't even sway people to get off there feet with the promise of a $15 beer or that amazing brisket mac n cheese.

This experience overall was 2nd to none even though Saturday didn't go our way on the field and really wish we could have stayed for Sunday but with limited flights back to the Midwest we had to bail early Sunday.

So on the plane ride home I thought about what could have changed from what I have seen talked about on here for the short few years since I joined the forum about the days of a passionate fan base and student section actually having an "on-field" effect on visitors and where it all went and if this is the new norm and countless other thoughts. Then it hit me that I have seen something similar and it reminded me a lot of a local college here and how their rapid growth out of a mid major basketball conference and they earned that by being that pain in the ass mid major that gave blue blood schools fits in the 1st and 2nd rounds of March Madness every year, well the wins kept coming and then off to a big conference they went and here locally the Creighton basketball game was the place to be seen whether you knew a 3 pointer from a touchdown, season ticket prices and donations for those that previously held tickets just kept climbing and pushed a lot of the "OG's" out of the building and I know there were a lot of similar chats going around town if the fanbase would ever be what it once was and to be honest I think it has but it took some coaching from those "OG's" that were able to weather the rapid growth to teach those that are new to scene on how to act in good times and bad.

Lengthy one I know but figured I would share an "Outsiders" view.

I don’t think it’s totally fair to say Blake had an “off day.” Yes, the bunt attempt was bad. But he had a hit and scorched another ball to the track that was just unlucky not to be gone. That’s not a bad day by any stretch of the imagination especially with someone thrown into a big time game with less then 10 sec at bats on the year. Needs to be in the lineup as DH consistently imo

There’s definitely a very valid reason to sit Chapman. My point is I would reward a Junior who has been with the program since day 1 with the benefit of the doubt. He was crushing the ball during the first half of season and could have easily bounced back this weekend.

PS. I recall CTV sticking with Hunter through his ups and downs during 23 season but could have missed something.

I think you gotta play Chapman. He was being counted on as a returner to supply production with his experience. Gotta hope he snaps out of his offensive woes very soon.

I agree somewhat. We have struggled for over a month to score. I think Tony was trying everything he could do to get more run support. I bet it was a really hard decision for Tony to make. I've been in that situation before you have to try to do everything you can to give the team the best chance to win . With only one weekend remaining there was no time to allow someone to work through a drought.

No doubt that Grimmer and Newstrom will be great next year.

Reese has struggled but he’s a gold glove caliber outfielder and no way I’m sitting him against a righty starter , maybe against a lefty

Dalton had 3.

Guess who lead the team yesterday in strikeouts?

I guess I need to make this very clear, my opinion isn't changing. I think sitting Reese was a mistake yesterday and I'm well aware of all the stats that were used to make the decision.
Reese was swinging at balls completely outta the strike zone. You gotta sit a guy who isn’t seeing the ball a lick. Mentally, he’s just wasn’t there. He’ll be back most likely.

Don’t forget the dropped catch at the wall and strikeouts. I think Grimmer himself would be disappointed with his day, but that’s up for speculation I suppose.

He was benched for 2 or 3 games, then got hot again.

CTV has favorites like CRB. They don't ever sit.

Out of curiosity, where did you sit on Saturday? Because you just described my section perfectly...

More than once TV has criticized fans this season. Don't think it was the right move.
Tony tends to speak his mind and he doesn't worry about being diplomatic. Isn't that part of what we love about him ?
I think he has earned the right to criticize the fans when they embarrass the program with empty seats.
Did you see the seats at the Arky game tonite at their place. Packed full. They did not use Thursday nite as an excuse.
Having said that, Danny White absolutely did the wrong thing moving the student section away from field.
Sometimes squeezing every last dollar is not the best way to conduct business.
