The Official “Regular Posters of the Basketball Forum” Thread

I didn't realize Clarence Swearengen had a son who played. Or maybe I had forgotten.

Either way, I will always remember Swearengen dunking the first basket, at TBA, in the first regular season men's game. I was up in the 300's, but I was young, so I saw it, pretty good. I think we beat Marquette, pretty cool.

Had this in transfer portal thread, but now that roster is filled out, thought I'd ask people's thoughts here:

PG: Gillespie | 32 MPG | 15 PPG
SG: Burg | 25 MPG | 12 PPG
SF: Ament | 31 MPG | 16 PPG
PF: Carey | 20 MPG | 8 PPG
C: Okpara | 25 MPG | 7 PPG
----------
G: Abram | 20 MPG | 8 PPG
G: Boswell | 9 MPG | 2 PPG
G: Henderson | 3 MPG | 1 PPG
F: Phillips | 20 MPG | 5 PPG
C: Estrella | 15 MPG | 6 PPG
----------
BE: Massamba
BE: Evans
BE: Brown

Things I Like:
80 PPG, punch off the bench, physical front court, a great 10 man rotation and depth behind.

JG can shoot the p*** out of the ball, in addition to being an elite facilitator.

Really like the Burg addition, think he will be a 3PT threat at SG who can also take it to the basket and run point to give Gillespie off-ball opportunities. Seems like a really smart player on tape, think he will make the team a complete one, would not sleep on him.

Ament sounds like he will be just as good as everyone thinks shooting the ball, and I keep reading that he plays slow/facilitates for others/is a very smart player. Just what you want in a superstar.

It looks like all our bigs are very physical and at least trying to improve their offensive toolkits. Will be very intimidating to play against that deep of a front court, and we know Barnes will coach them tough.

If I'm right, Abram off the bench as a shooter who can defend is exactly what the team will need. Boswell and Henderson minutes are bonus.

Things I Don't Like:
Not much, but I guess the unknowns. How will Ament handle games? Will the front court actually be able to score other than dunking? If Boswell/Phillips/Estrella/Okpara make even modest jumps in quality after coming back (which I haven't really even projected in points), the team will be elite. But will they?

In sum, I think this might be the most complete Tennessee roster we've seen out of the last couple years, with just as much, if not more, upside. All the makings of a championship team imo!

One Cent not having a very good week.

Yep. On top of the little academic scandal (that One Cent knew nothing about- wink, wink), it appears their best transfer punched his girlfriend in the face and was arrested. We shall see if One Cent has more ethics than Calipari. Cal had a player beat up a girlfriend and didn’t boot him from the team.

And yet we have people who want us to schedule this renegade program. For these examples and numerous others, it should never happen.

One of the shortcomings of Tennessee teams over the years (IMO) is the lack of depth, even when we had a great top 5 or 6. If everyone steps up and plays to their potential, we should have very few if any weeknesses. As you said, at least on paper. It will be fun to watch it all unfold.

I will say based on our roster that we are going to have really good practices and as @bleedingTNorange has mentioned iron sharpens iron. Last year we couldn’t even do 5 on 5 at some points. This year we should be able to weather injuries/foul trouble better as well. I know there is a lot of unknowns with a lot of them, but at least we have bodies this year.

I’m fairly optimistic about Burg.

I think it’s likely his talent/skill is pretty equivalent to around a top 75 portal recruit at worst.

i think we are heading into the season now with a top 15 roster.
