Playing Memphis is huge for them and does nothing for us. Penny should've been thankful. Instead he was classless and lied. It's hard to make Barnes mad/unforgiving yet here we are.

Our basketball rivals are Kentucky then a huge gap down to a cluster of Auburn/Alabama/Georgia/Florida/Ole Miss imo. OOC it's Purdue at this point.

Florida and Vandy are both far above everyone on that cluster you mentioned, sans UF obviously. Not sure Ole Miss registers as anything more than any OOC game for most. Bama and Auburn probably file in at 5, 6 for most, depending on personal preference.

Not sure I get the line of thinking, he would just be a coveted assistant next coaching season, or potentially be in line for a HC job. He took the Indiana job because he’s getting about double the money and Tennessee wasn’t going get close to that for 2nd chair.

Yeah...those days of playing in Memphis for recruiting etc have been gone. I personally never felt any advantage of playing Memphis in ANY sport....much less basketball. PH has created a toxic culture there (Tiger fans would say no but it's a clear fact). And the Tigers have painted themselves into the proverbial corner when hiring a high school/AAU basketball coach (CLEARLY... they had no other option but to hire PH for various reasons). Now...it would prob take an act of state congress to dismiss him. Had a friend on his staff for a couple of years and he was able to transition into a good position in the athletic dept involving all sports. He said every day with PH seemed like some new drama. I personally think that's why Rick will not play them any more....Rick simply isn't into DRAMA! Me neither...thanks Rick!

Absolutely agree. It has never been worth playing them. No advantage whatsoever for Tennessee.

For me, I want to beat Bama in everything. Plus they've had our number in basketball unlike any team besides Kentucky. Auburn has periods of rivalry inflation and with Bruce there now, this is one of them. Ole Miss has more impact for those who live in West Tennessee and are close to Ole Miss.

I'm also looking at them through a long lens of 50+ years.

IMO it's Kentucky and then Vandy, and we should play them twice every year. After that to me it's probably UF/Alabama/Auburn and of those 2 are more because they are rivals in other sports and honestly Auburn is only kinda because of the Pearl connection. Once he is gone I think they go back to being just another team like the remaining SEC teams.

I know in this modern age, you can do a bunch remotely. But he was in Memphis last night, Nashville tonight, and somewhere tomorrow, all while he’s getting multiple commits and hiring a coach. I understand this has all been in the works, but it’s interesting getting his comments in real time. He doesn’t miss a beat while signing 500 autographs and making jokes with Mike Keith.

I want Carolina again, and preferably when it matters. Probably more for bragging rights with a few buddies, but still owe them something.
