I think he's gone....IIRC is was only going to be 4 episodes.

He is in the credits for the last episode but I'm thinking that is probably just footage from the 4 episodes he was in.

Although I have to say while it would explain him being out a good while, it's kind of weak for that to be what is his permanent exit. I mean he will heal from that; unless they explain why he's permanently gone in the next 2 episodes.
