The Offensive Line is Atrocious Thread (merged)

Coach Mahoney is the first UT OL coach in history that tells his Lineman "once you start to lose your block, give up and put your hands down by your sides....after all, you should never hold....a sack is better than a holding penalty"
Congrats Mahoney! :clapping
(but whatever...it must be just youth/inexperience)

It's as if they are coached not to touch the DL. Never seen worse technique, footwork and hands. And for ****'s sake, get a holding penalty or something besides letting guys just slap you and run by. I hardly recall and holding penalties, yet we give up 7-8 sacks per game.

I would be thrilled if they held their man for 2 secs. I've seen several weak shoves and couple belly bumps. Weak! Even the older guys play weak. Not sec caliber unfortunately

I feel a little dumber after reading that. Thanks OP :thud:

I just can't see how the backups could be much worse.. I'd at least give a few other combinations a look. We make everyone's dline look great..
Pretty telling when an FCS school gets 5.5 sacks on an SEC team. There is no way for CBJ, Bajakian or Mahoney to hide behind excuses, any longer. Inexperience doesn't excuse a OL getting regularly beat by mid-major and FCS schools

All other SEC programs have a mixture of experience and youth at some point. This is a catastrophic failure on the staff's part. People keep blaming Dooley. His not recruiting a single OL one season hurt somewhat, but it was this staff's job to rectify the problem in recruiting and development.

By not even playing Blair, they are effectively admitting they did a pi$$-poor job of evaluating and/or development. When you recruit a highly regarded JUCO OT to fill a major hole on the OL and you end up not even playing the guy....but try to redshirt him, instead....that is a catastrophic failure. The kind that can sink an entire season.

Duuuuuuude, nobody is defending anything. The offensive line is the cornerstone on which an offense is built upon. I know full well that we are talking the same UTC that was able to pressure Worley so yes absolutely they could set up a pick 6 and had they done so early in the game the result might have been very bad whether it be UTC or anyone else. Until that line matures, every bit of speculation regarding what UT needs to do is worthless. Any decent Defense will quickly adjust to any adjustments we make.

This board is so fortunate to have you as the ultimate authority on all things football. Your arguments over hypotheticals are riveting. Dude.

I can understand a true freshman OT lacking experience and needing to grow, but how is he going to overcome just being slow? He just watches them come around him and kind of trudges behind them to the scene of the QB sack.

Damn.

I miss Cody Pope.

Still can't believe the Juwan James pep talk didn't work either. Maybe these guys took it as a challenge to give up 43 sacks or whatever in a season.

The only options are runs or three step drops. How can the line get whipped by Chattanooga?

It's getting close to the last option. Run the Emory & Henry and include the wildcat plays in this formation.

I hate saying this. Normally I am a sunshine pumper. Here goes my first negative reply...
I keep saying I support my VOLS and I hope the O-line gets better every week. However, why does #55 even have a scholarship? I give him an F in his performance. But if it were up to me, he would be kicked off the team for effort!! I don't know how many times I saw him just stand there and look like he doesn't give a rats colon exit if he just got roasted. I thought this was a no-quit team!

Relax chief. I'm an alumnus as well, class of '90, but as much as I may gripe and moan on here, I got no say in the matter. Only Jones is gonna make that call which was my point.

I'm just like most on here, tired of being one component short of good football. We either have good O or good D, but never both. But, this is the worst O line we've ever fielded in my years.

I am missing Alan Posey and getting the impression that watching the rest of the season is going to be like tuning in to watch a 3hr trainwreck. With the OL leading the way.

Yep....it's bad when even Dooley's offenses make ours look like a Pop Warner squad.

There is a lot of give up our our OL. I can adopt being youthful/inexperienced, but just giving up blocking cause well....he was stating to get around me??? this is on coaching. Our Ol is bad....but it's not all on inexperience. It's evident every game.

Could be worse I guess. We could be Florida fans.

I am missing Hiestand as well.

I said it last week, Florida showed the game plan to the entire SEC on how to throttle the Vols offense for the rest of the season.

You know these guys can't run block and you can get pressure with 4 down linemen.

There is no point in blitzing the Vols.

Spot on. That Robert N. Kid at ole piss on D-line is going to be salivating when he sees the film of our o line today. Should we run the old wishbone formation with 3 running backs to help our 5 offensive linemen against 4 rushers?!!!

Your original post was just facetious and ignorant. Seems there's a lot of that around here lately.

How so? Although i was being sarcastic, about Mahoney actually telling OL that, it's beyond me why its not coached into these kids to finish blocks or at least try to. Game after game this is clear. It's on CBJ. It really is on Mahoney.
But, whatever...ignore(most may). I don't post for likes or agreement, just conversation.
So why do you think that, game after game, the OL thinks "yeah you are getting by me,SACK.. I'm going to help Worley get up"? Is it just youth and inexperience?
