The Numbers Thread

When we get to a point where we have four quality scholarship QBs on a consistent basis, we can afford to take less in a class. When you're down to one scholarship QB you do what Butch just did...take care of the program...can't recruit scared and be held hostage to the whims of a teenager JMO FWIW NAACP

+1...pretty simple concept you would think.

I'd have just taken the 2 EEs. What does the 3rd really do? Imo nothing. All 3 will not stay. All taking the 3rd did was add a body and adding that body may have cost you the best QB in the 2016 class. No more experience with Jones, he'll even be coming in behind the other guys. You know your starter is Dobbs. I'd have had Dormady as my #2, Jennings as my #3 and hope to RS him. I already had Kendall in 2016. After I saw how the 2 EEs did early on, I would then consider a 2nd in 2016 with losing Peterman. Much more likely they stick around. Much more likely the time spent coaching them is time well spent. Sneaking in the 3rd guy after the EEs were in Imo just assures you of problems coming. I get it the fans will ignore it and make excuses for it. When it happens they will just call the kid a quitter. It's played out the same time after time.

IMO I think we lose Kendall here shortly and picking up Oden will be alright. We'll see if he sticks long term. I've said it from the beginning I see Jones as the odd man out. Imo just too many things going against him to still be a Vol beyond year 1.

Jones will be the odd man out and be gone after year 1? Not unless he just hates Knoxville IMO. He's the most talented of the three freshman...

Imo he'll hate being #3 or #4 on the depth chart come game #1. Won't really have anything to do with Knoxville. Then when it sets in that #1 returns in 2016 and #2 will be back for several years taking over #1, imo...He Gone. Jmo TIFWIW

Dormady and Jennings will have a decided head start on Jones for next fall. Wouldn't surprise to see him redshirt and make his case in 2016. Question is "will Jones stick with it?" And then comes Kendall. Due to the normal situations of injuries, I think at least 3 QBs will get playing time this fall. Sincerely doubt that 4 will get snaps. Hopefully, all will stay and compete.

I'm leaning toward no Jones or Kendall at UT in 2016. Its probably time for Butch to push for a commitment from Oden.

2016 QBs

Dobbs
Dormady
Jennings
Janzek
Oden

Focus on Hunter Johnson in 2017.

Im glad your crystal ball is all tuned up there LV.
Mine cannot predict a recruit leaving before he ever sets foot on campus. Thank goodness the people that matter in our program do not think like you do.
The best players dont care about competition. All our new QBs understand they are fighting for the second spot the next two years unless something happens to Dobbs. All three of them think they can be that guy.
One or two of them will likely redshirt. One may change positions. One or two may get hurt. I think Id wait a little while before writing Jones off the roster.....

I think they do actually. Take the 3rd as you expect more and more attrition.

attrition happens. In every program. Especially when trying to flip a roster like we have had to do. Having a third QB that is ready to play can be important.

So Jones commits last, knowing full well the situation he's walking into, and is quoted as saying he's a competitor and loves the challenge, and if he has to wait that's fine, he wants what's best for the program, and you assume he's gone after a year? Weird, I thought you were the guy who took recruits at their word, and didn't try to read into something that might not be there. Of course, it could be what most of us have suspected all along, and you only say that in certain situations where it suits your argument. Yeah, pretty clear that's what happens.

Most all recruits/signees will say the right things competition wise. Did you expect him to say, "oh I'll give it a year and if I'm not at least #2 I'm out? Of course not. Wharton, Hendrix, Scott, they all say the right thing when asked. That is of course till they are looking where their next stop is. Anyone who knows how recruiting works knows the chance all 3 QBs last more than a year at UT is very slim. Jones just happens to be the odd man out Imo.

You most clearly hit that nail squarely on the head. Recruits words are golden unless the are contrary to LVs doctrine.

I don't buy into everything recruits say. Torrance Gibson would be a good example. Chuma Edoga would be another. If you look at their threads, I was never really buying what those fellas were selling. I'm sure there are many other examples.

I believe they took 24 this year. Could still have over signed, but obviously didn't take as many as he could(25) plus pack on some BS/GS/CS/WS and so on.

Do the math if you take 24 every year that's still over the limit of 85 total. There will always be attrition so oversigning is just a fact of life. Dooley is the only coach at UT that didn't prepare for the attrition by oversigning.

I've never said some attrition wasn't expected. Imo UT just looks to be having ALOT right now compared to others. One thing those sexy over signed classes will ensure, is much more attrition.

You guys don't realize how great LV's ability is on seeing the future. The reason he went to Hawaii is to buy up property. He has picked the winning numbers on seven major lottery jackpots and has a net worth of over $450 million. He never has to work, he just stays on VN and predicts the future for us. If you check his stats you'll notice that he's never been wrong.
Can anyone top this tale?

Of course I wouldn't expect them to say that, but I'm not the one who claims to take everything the recruits say at face value, that's you. In reality it appears that you take what they say at face value when it suits your agenda, but will disregard what they say if it doesn't. I'm not worried about about a few guys who leave the program because there are better players in front of them. Attrition will always occur, and it will always occur at a higher rate when a roster is being flipped. I would think anyone who knows how recruiting works would know this, and that it's not an inherently negative thing. I would also expect someone who knows recruiting to know that the more high quality prospects a team signs, the greater chance there is that you find the right player for your program. As far as who leaves and when, I don't really care. I don't think you're correct about Jones leaving after a year, but that also wasn't the point of my post at all.

I don't play the lottery. I've only purchased one home thus far in Hawaii. Not having to work is something I take full benefit of. I don't so much predict the future, I am just able to step back and see things playing out. Especially with a thing like recruiting. If you follow it long enough, you know how these things tend to play out. I've been wrong. When you make as many predictions as I do, its going to happen.

Yes, attrition happens everywhere. The glaring difference right now is other schools see their RSSOs and JR's leaving. We see kids bailing out if UT having been on campus for less than a year. You can call it normal. Imo, it's not.

"He's flipping the roster". That he is. Problem is about a dozen of the last ones to walk HE signed the last two years. LOL

That's the same model Saban used to rebuild Bama so quickly. Oversigning and then run off the kids that don't pan out. Butch's entire philosophy for this program is competing at all positions, no one can get comfortable or complacent. However, the rebuilding is almost complete and you will see less oversigning with each coming class as the numbers equal out.

You're not as funny as you think you are, judging by all the "LOL"s you've been ending your posts with lately. It's not a problem. Oh no, a few players that are getting beaten out by better players are leaving, what a disaster. When you have to do a complete overhaul, it IS normal, and it's not a problem. You're also comparing our current rate of attrition to that of schools that aren't going through a complete rebuild, which is an asinine comparison. The amount of attrition UT has had is necessary with the number of players that have been signed, and it's not alarming or troubling or by accident. It's by design. Signing the most quality prospects that you can increases the odds that you end up with a roster full of ballers. I really don't know why it's such a difficult concept for you to grasp. It's as if you truly believe that you're the only one who "gets it", and that you know how to rebuild a program better than college coaching staffs. Notice no one was talking on signing day about how UT signed another great class, but it doesn't matter if they keep having a moderate amount of attrition. That's because it's not concerning, it's not something that shouldn't happen, or anything like that.
