Good Morning Nationals!

The Notes....

tfpOnline:Fulmer's Promise
Without prompting, Tennessee coach Phillip Fulmer fired his eyes at the media Tuesday and pledged: "We’re going to run the football better than we have."

Fulmer plans to spend more time this week in practice with the offensive line, his former specialty as a position coach.

"We have to take some pressure off the passing game," Fulmer said, "although the passing game has certainly been our strength. We have to take some pressure off our young quarterback and help our defense."

Cutcliffe also pointed some of the blame at himself. Thus far this season, Tennessee has thrown 281 times (54 times more than its opposition) and rushed 270 (50 fewer times).

"Sometimes you get in situations against these really good defenses," Cutcliffe said, "it’s hard to convince yourself that you can knock them off the football and run the ball."

defensive lineman Demonte Bolden earned high marks Saturday against LSU. Sophomore Bolden was the first UT defensive tackle off the bench, was in on a careerhigh four tackles and played on the game-deciding drive.

"He’s come a long ways," defensive line coach Dan Brooks said. "He played the best Saturday he’s played."

Bolden hasn’t wrested a starting spot away from Matt McGlothlin but could figure prominently in Saturday’s game at run-heavy Arkansas.

"It’s hard to play full speed if you don’t know what to do," said UT defensive coordinator John Chavis. "He’s more comfortable. He just looked so much faster."

Marvin Mitchell expects to play Saturday despite having hurt his shoulder against LSU.

"I’ll be able to play. I’ll be fine," Mitchell said. "The only reason I’m probably not practicing is I’m trying to keep away from contact. I feel like if we had a game today, I’d be out there right now."

tfpOnline:Commentary:CBS' Lundquist On SEC Memories
This is a very long piece with some great memories of great games gone by.Click this story, it's a great read.
A couple of Highlights....

Best SEC game: Tennessee’s 34-32 win over Florida in 2001 to win the SEC East. "Last Saturday’s Tennessee-LSU game was top-five. But that delayed game down in the Swamp was for everything. You had Casey Clausen directing the band. That was something."

Best SEC game: Tennessee’s 41-38, six-overtime win over Arkansas in 2002. "I remember being in the Arkansas locker room at halftime. Tennessee was dominating on the field but Houston Nutt was encouraging his team that the game was far from over. Tennessee smacked them around the whole first half. Then Arkansas scores two quick touchdowns and it goes to overtime. I remember in the fourth overtime, the players could barely get on the field. They could barely walk. I thought, ‘How ridiculous. They can’t protect themselves.’ But that was a memorable one."

On Saturday’s Tennessee-Arkansas game: "Arkansas must feel like Rodney Dangerfield — they’re getting no respect at all. Somewhere in Fayetteville, Houston Nutt is talking about respect. They haven’t been given any. They can earn it, it’s on national TV, GameDay is there and if they can beat the pulp out of Tennessee they can make a statement. "Tennessee has got to be able to take advantage of the injured safety (Michael Grant). I haven’t talked to anyone, but I don’t think Erik Ainge will play. If he does, he won’t be as effective. I think Phillip Fulmer and David Cutcliffe want to look longterm instead of one game. If Tennessee does pull this one out, keep those Coach of the Year ballots handy because it’ll be an uphill battle."

Tennessean: Ainge Misses Second Practice
Although Tennessee Coach Phillip Fulmer isn't quite ready to come out and say it, all signs are pointing to redshirt freshman Jonathan Crompton starting at quarterback this week at Arkansas.

David Cutcliffe said he expects Crompton to play even better than he did against LSU if he gets the start this week.
"He absolutely is going to be much more comfortable," Cutcliffe said. "He will see better. We are not going to limit a game plan. We will go in with a full game plan for him."

Crompton said he's approaching practice this week as if he'll be the starter.
"In my opinion, either one of us that goes out will do fine, and we'll have a good game," he said.

Defensive coordinator John Chavis said the Vols' defense isn't where it should be.
The Vols rank ninth in the SEC in total defense after allowing 478 yards against LSU and 395 against South Carolina. They're also 10th in first downs allowed and ninth in opponent third-down conversions.
"I really thought that we'd be a little better at this point," Chavis said. "We're not dog-awful, but we're not what we used to be."

Tennessee picked up its second commitment of the week in running back/linebacker Savion Frazier of Woodbridge, Va.
The 6-foot-1, 210-pound Frazier also had scholarship offers from Virginia Tech, Louisville, Duke and Marshall. He's rated by Rivals.com as the 29th-best prospect overall in Virginia. He's rushed for more than 1,100 yards and 14 touchdowns this season for Gar-Field High and also has two sacks and two interceptions on defense.

Go Vols!!!

Well I am glad to see that you have decided to put Ainge in. I was hoping that Crompton would play so we can see something more from the QB position, more along the lines of Jamarcus Russell. A healthy Ainge beats us, Crompton however, don't know.

I suspect you've got your names turned around. Expect Jon Crompton to start.

Oh I thought I read that Ainge might see the field. I knew that he hadn't practiced, but Fulmer still hasn't named Crompton the starter???

Well either way, Ainge being banged up, he should probably sit on the sidelines. I think we are going to show a lot of nickel and dime defense.

Do you guys think you can stop our ground game?

two words. John. Chavis.

Our DL is not really in a place to fully stop anyone right now, but Chief will have a good plan and put his kids in the right places. I think it's fair to expect that you will have to earn everything you get.

Ask Lynch from CAL. They came in ranked higher and with a Heisman candidate. I think we'll contain but not totally stop. Enough to make a game out of it.

no, but we might be able to slow it down. Do you guys think you stop ourr passing game? I thought that your passing D looked suspect at best, could be very high scoring game for both teams.

I guarantee that we can't stop your passing game. What I will say though is that you will have to make some runs and I haven't seen you guys be successful at that all year.

Guarantee is big word. Don't even get a solid guarantee when I bought my last used car. Do you sell used cars? I'm in the market.

Your passing game is better than our pass defense.

But our running game is WAAAAYYY better than your run defense.

I think this is the difference maker.

No one has held us to 13. Not even with a red freshman quarterback vs top 10 in the country defense. You will find out Saturday why.

That was with Justin Harrell at DT. He was a huge loss that the DL never recovered from. If he and Inky don't get hurt, UT is probably undefeated at this point.

Why yes......ok no, but I say that only to get this blast off. No Defense in the country can stop McFadden right now. He is playing and running so hard that he will be the difference this weekend. I don't usually predict scores, but will say this we win.

i tend to agree. i think this could be much higher scoring than that though. both teams do what they do well. it will be interesting to see if crompton can really come on and make the plays we need to.

but more than anything i wish, oh how i wish, we had last year's defensive line going in to this game.

Is your O-Line good at pass protection? I haven't seen you guys play much this year. You can bet Herring will bring the heat against a backup in a hostile Razorback stadium.

Our O-line is great at pass protection, just can't run block..

I agree that Herring will bring it to rattle a freshman QB, but our D-line has been playing unbelievable this year and they continue it this Sat. Yet, I am sure that Cutcliffe will be ready for that with lots and lots of two and three step drops.

Not only is our O-line good at pass protecting, Crompton can run away from pressure.
