We were just discussing in the thread about the bus trip how to compare Florida and UT this year. To summarize:

I noted that while I give tons of credit to UT for winning the SECE, one cannot proclaim them "better" than Florida based on that fact alone. I noted that both teams are 9-3 and that UT's losses were by a combined 77 points and only one of the losses (incidentally, to Florida) is against a team ranked in the BCS.

On the flip side, Florida's three losses are by a total of 19 points and all three of Florida's losses are to teams ranked in the BCS.

Hatvol has responded by reminding me three times that you are SECE champs and also noting that you beat our bbal team three times over the last two years even though we won the NCAA basketball tournament both years.

I agree that winning the SEC is a main objective for both teams, really its second only to the national title. UT has a chance to win the SEC and deserves that shot given that it won the SECE. But there is a built-in unequal playing field every year in that we do not play the same SEC schedule.

That is not UT's fault, by any measure. Its the way that the system is set up and there is no way we can all play the exact same SEC schedule. But the fact remains that Florida played the two best SECW teams and both of them are BCS ranked whereas UT played two middle of the road SECW opponents that don't even show up in the BCS rankings at all.

As to the Hat's notion that Florida's losses to your bball team can be analogized to this situation, that's absurd. First, the bball regular season is 25 games long. National champions don't win them all. Second, the teams are well aware that the goal is to win the NCAA tourmanet, that they will lose a bit before then, and that the plan is to peak and win then, not some Tuesday night in late January.

Do not misunderstand. UT won the SECE and I make no claim that they don't deserve it. I'm just saying that there is a difference between appreciating that fact and converting it into bragging rights over Florida, something you definitely cannot claim this year.

this is a stupid excuse.

there will be a year when Tennessee plays the more difficult teams from the West and Florida doesn't.

do you ever quit crying?

And in those years you may feel free to point it out -- assuming you crushed us like bug.

I'm not crying. I have no problem at all with UT being SECE champions and I think you stand much more of a chance to win the SECCG than I thought a week ago.

I just feel that someone needs to reel in the VN faithful when they get carried away and start thinking they can fly, do brain surgery, can outrun a train, or that they just had a bad game against the Gators that day.

Can't convert it to bragging rights? Us winning the division and you not is pretty definitive. If we beat LSU then it gets even more definitive.

I'll use the logic of those UGA fans out there over their USC loss. Our defense was young and inexperienced and you capitalized on that. But down the stretch we won and the fact is we are where we are because of that.

How does it feel having to watch Tenn play in the SEC Championship Game? Don't feel bad law, 3rd in the East ain't too bad. The best you can hope for is the capitol one bowl, at least we have a shot at a BCS Bowl. Funny how UT gets the last laugh on this one. I guess Superman can't win them all.

59-20 is about as definitive as it gets.

UT deserves to play in the title game. They earned it. And you can argue that winning the SECE means that they had a more successful season than did Florida this year. But that does not equate into a favorable comparison for UT between the two teams for the reasons set forth above.

Why? They have no reason to be on the bus. They don't play another meaningful game til next season starts.

You have at least one more meaningful game, I concede that. But if its Florida v. Illinois and UT v. Virginia in the bowls, I'll remind you of this post later.

Beat Georgia and your schedule against the west is irrelevant. You got LSU, who happens to be the best in the west this year, but UT will have to go through them to claim the championship, anyway. Do you really think playing Ole Miss and Auburn is any tougher than getting Bama and Arkansas?

The fact of the matter is that Florida lost two games to teams with talent inferior to theirs in Auburn and Georgia. Take care of buisness against either and you don't have anything to gripe about. Tennessee is simply the beneficiary of the Gators not consistently living up to their ability.

You play to win championships. The team that wins them is better than the team that doesn't. It's a concept taught very early on in my sports leagues so I'm surprised you haven't heard the idea before.

I’ve heard of crocodile tears, but ‘gator tears are the best. I hope that you don’t think that we actually read that verbose crap. All I got was the following:

...one cannot proclaim them "better" than Florida based on that fact alone(whine, whine, sniffle, sniffle)...
...one cannot proclaim them "better" than Florida based on that fact alone (babble, sniffle, whine, whine)...
...That is not UT's fault, by any measure. (sniffle, whine, whine)...

Reminds me of a movie: The Crying Game.

If you guys could take care of business against a Georgia team we completely emasculated for you, there would be no need for you to complain.

There is nothing Lawgator can say to this. Absolutely nothing.

If UT played florida right now, UT would win easily. They just didn't show up that day in Gainesville, but are the better team. Gator fans---watch UT this weekend in Atlanta baby, winning another SEC title!!!!

You vols fans are about to find out just how good you really are. And yeah we slipped up and got beat by Arkansas, because i know thats what you're about to say but oh well y'all got drilled three times. Our 2 loses have been close and so have the ones the gators lost. You vols are just lucky y'all didn't have to play us in the regular season are y'all wouldn't be going to Atlanta anyways. But don't get me wrong i'm glad you are. Oh and isn't this 3 years in a roll that the gators have beat you in football, if i was you i would keep my mouth shut about the gators
