I missed the end of the UCLA/Indiana game, but apparently it was more controversial than most think.

With 30 some odd seconds left and Indiana in-bounding the ball down by 2, watch Howland try to harrass the IU player not once but twice, and actually get warned by the ref the first time.

Apparently Howland said in the postgame presser he was trying to distract the IU player.

At best this is unsportsmanlike, and I hope that in spite of Pearl's energy and passion that he wouldn't do something like this.

I propose the Howland rule. Anytime a player is trying to throw the ball in bounds within 10 feet of the opposing team's bench, all players and coaches must sit until the ball is in bounds.

That was crazy. How in the WORLD did that referee allow that to happen?

I would love to see Fulmer out on the field, jumping up and down and yelling into a bullhorn as an Alabama kicker is lining up to try the game-winning field goal.

That's appalling. I can't believe a D1 coach would do that, I can't believe the referees would allow it, and I can't believe more hasn't been made of it in the media. If I'd been the IU coach and seen that happening, I think I would've pulled my team off the floor rather than inbounding the ball.

Yeah, Kelvin Sampson attempting to capture the moral highground. That would have been hilarious.

Good point -- I was speaking generally, rather than considering who the actual IU coach is.

I'm still appalled. Regardless of who the opposing coach is, it's still bush league. This is the NCAA tournament, not a girls' tee ball game.

For some reason, I'm not the least bit bothered by Howland's actions. Was it silly? Yes. Was it a capital offense? No.

I think what bothers me about it is that it's a coach, and therefore outside the field of play. If it's a UCLA player, no problem. A coach? Too far.

Maybe that's an irrational distinction, because obviously basketball coaches influence what's happening on the floor all the time. But in my mind, there's a big difference between a coach A) shouting instructions at his own players and B) getting in the face of the other team and shouting the equivalent of "Batter batter batter....SWING batter!" That's the job of students' section, not the coach.

Well put.

You don't like Sampson, do you? Is it because he turned down UT when they eventually hired Jerry Green? I know he got into some NCAA trouble at OU, but I've kind of liked the man, if for no other reason the fact that he is one of the few (if only) Native Americans coaching in Division 1 BB.

I can't think of a bigger scumbag in all of college sports than Kelvin Sampson. The concept of him ever coaching at Tennessee makes me want to vomit.

I'm still waiting for the day the committee finally forces them(UCLA) to leave California prior to a possible final four appearance.. I'm sick of seeing them slotted in California every year.
