This is an interesting article in that it makes the case that due to our recent growth in population, Tennessee is becoming a factory for blue chip football recruits and why it will remain so for sometime to come.
I'll post a few brief excerpts:

The state of Tennessee is loaded with talent. Data suggests it’ll stay that way.

[...]

Tennessee is accurately categorized as a ā€œsleeping giantā€ of a program. Their in-state recruiting trends belie this fact. The truth is, Pruitt is sitting on a state that is now producing college football talent more akin to some of its neighbors.

[...]

Not only did the raw number of blue chip recruits increase—the number of top 200 talents more than doubled. From 2010 to 2014, a recruiting class could have some nice finishing touches with in-state kids. Now it could be based around them.

[...]

So Tennessee's recent talent output is not a short term phenomenon. It's going to be a state that Power 5 schools will want to raid. That's why getting someone like Pruitt was essential, because he's a lights-out recruiter at every stop he's been.

The Necessity of In-State Recruiting

Every time I read something like this my memory spontaneously harkens back to Joe Paterno and Leroy Thompson.

It vexes me when outliers raid our talent coffer, but I also understand that a kid must to do what is best for himself.

Didn't we lose a high 4 star kid out of Nashville to #UrbanLiar ? Maybe we try to get our foot back in the door. I don't think anyone outside of Ohio believes the dude won't be fired.

Kane Patterson if I'm not mistaken

Why limit yourself to the state? We've always thrived when recruiting nationally. Where they live doesn't matter. If they're talented and fit the system, Pruitt will pursue them. That's all that matters. Too much emphasis is put on in-state recruiting..

Most of the talent seems to be mid-state. Those kids don’t care about Vols Football, and won’t care until we can start winning. Alabama, Auburn, Georgia, and LSU are just as likely to land them as we are. So get the bag men.

There are a lot of transplant recruits living in Tn, that may have a dream school other than our Vols.

The Vol fan recruit is the ones we shouldn’t miss out on. Legacy players too.

I don't know. I do think the talent has improved immensely in TN, but I'm still of the opinion that a 3 star from GA or FL is often times better than a 4 star from TN. JMO
Is there a big difference between 3 and 4 star recruits? I figured that would be rather subjective.
For example: Arron Rodgers and Von Miller were 3 stars. Tom Brady and Ben Roethlisberger were 0 stars.

I know all those names are exceptional talent, but still.. I dont put much emphasis on Stars.

@ OP. good post. I think Pruitt should have the state locked down.

Do you think that Butches handling of Hurd hurt instate recruiting this past cycle? I know Pruitt had very little time to recruit this last class but I think kids from TN decided to go elsewhere because of Butch. Now I see that trend changing for 2019-2020 and beyond.

Get the best 25 you can each class. Don’t give a damn where they’re from.
Absolutely.
We were at our best before the influx. If what you are after just happens to be found in 1 of the TN kids, great.
If a kid from somewhere else fits the mold better, I hope our staff aren't using scholarships just so message board coaches can boast "yeah, locked down the state."

Aaron Rodgers was a zero star who’s only offer was as a walk-on at Illinois. Von Miller was a five star and one of the top five recruits in the nation. I don’t think they had the star rating system when Brady was in high school, but he would have been low rated...but he did get a full ride to Michigan. I agree with your overall point tho.

They will have to build their relationship with TN high schools over time. I'm sure they will. I know Butch made in state recruits a priority, but I don't really care where they come from. The reality is that if we were to only pull major TN recruits we wouldn't win many games.

UT gets what they get, if a instate player is a UT fan and wants to play for UT.......fine. I'm ok if a player goes to another school. I agree with some of the posters, get the best 25 that will make UT great again. The last 10 years has done nothing to build that "I want to play for UT" type attitude or devotion. It seems to me, some players have gotten a kick out of commiting to another school, so, that tells me they never were UT kind of players in the first place.

I haven't kept track, but how many players has committed to another school and actually had success? I recall a WR that went to USCw, and Craig (QB) that went to Auburn.........who else?

Higgins at Clemson will probably be their go to receiver this year. He would have been a Vol except for CBJ coaching incompetence.
