I've been reading the board for a while, and I just wonder if there are any Vol fans that feel we have a steal in this kid. I know I've heard all the garbage arguments that we offered him because of Da'Rick Rogers--while I believe that getting Rogers was definitely a bonus (and well worth it) from what I understand Chaney did some pretty thorough background work on this kid. We can say yes the kid is bright but he seems to have the measurables (6"3 200 lbs) and I think an endorsement from an OC that has worked with Drew Brees should have some major sway. I feel like Tyler Bray will be our starter (if not this year then definitely next) but I think Nance if properly developed could be a factor in a QB competition.

GO VOLS!

Competition is always a good thing, and I think that he will be solid enough to provide at least that by next year.

I wonder how business is going for Nance Carpet and Rugs?

that's not so far-fetched

If Simms starts and keeps the job all this year, I think it is way far-fetched. Now if Simms starts and struggles several games and then Bray takes the job this year, then I can see it. However, that would make Bray more than a 3 year starter at that point.

So you are saying Simms wins the job this year then gets benched for Bray next year?

I think it's readily apparent that Bray has better tools and composure than Simms, and only needs to learn the college game and another year of O line recruiting and development before he is tapped as the starter.

Simms wins this year because Dooley won't want to ruin Bray for the future, but after that there's no reason why Bray won't give us a better shot to win.

Would have to happen in the middle of the season. If Simms opens and ends the season as the starter, then he'll most likely be the starter in '11.

Simms only wins the job because he has 3 years on Bray. I think Bray beats Simms out next year.

I don't see this at all. If Simms starts all year in the SEC and plays 12 -13 games and keeps his job, no way they bench him next year. If he loses the job to Bray sometime during the season, then yes Bray would be the starter next year more than likely.

Simms will win this year because he's a better QB and gives us a better chance to win. If Bray is better, he will start this year.

I have seen nothing that tells me Simms is better than Bray. Bray is better, but there's no reason to start him from the get go this year. Not with this O-line and not with the entire offense learning Dooley.

It's not an all or nothing proposition. It's not like we can only go 3-9 or 8-4. What if we go 5-7? That might not be enough to displace Simms in the middle of the season, nor would it be enough for him to lock down the starting spot for next year.

If Nance redshirts, he would have 2 years as the most senior quarterback after Bray is selected in the first round after his junior year, so I hope he's good... and I am a fan

I agree with what you are saying Heberling.

Just because Simms is the better option this year doesn't mean that Bray won't develop a ton over this year and be the obvious better choice going into 2011.

Simms is a band-aid at this point at the QB position, the same way Nick Stevens would have been if he started this year.

If Simms starts all year and plays well enough to keep his job and then Bray comes back and challenges him for the spot in 2011 it will be a great problem to have. That means Simms did well this year and Bray is on pace to be a stud. I hope we see that happen. I kinda lean with VolsFanRJ and Tripper on this one though. If it's Simms job all year this year it will likely be his job to lose in '11 as well.

Won't matter because Bray will start for 3 years.

If many get their wishes and Bray is the starter to start next season... then I'd say his chances of bad things happening are better than 50%.

Ainge played as a Fr behind a veteran OL and STILL had a season ending injury. As a sophomore behind an OL that performed worse but still had more experience and development than the current one, he had his confidence completely shattered.

If you are a Bray fan, and I am, you should be hoping that Simms can warm the seat and take the abuse while that OL develops.

I agree to this statement. Watching the O & W game it seemed to me that Bray was a much better QB. Obviously his stats were better, but the things like stepping up in the pocket to let a play devlop more seemed a really natural thing. Bray is just way undersized and I believe that is what will keep him on the sideline this season. As far as personal feelings go either Tyler Bray or Nash Nance could be the starter in my opinion. They both seem really intelligent, and they also seem to want to play for the Vols. I'm looking at this season as either an extension of this past spring or a early jump on next one. There is so much to learn in this league about our own team that any other view point to me is just going to let everyone down. I'm not saying that we are going to lose every game, but it is what it is. To me next year is when we can start looking at the true competition at skill position's. Go VOLS!!
