Just a question here: Is the most intelligent team we have ever had? Dobbs, the rocket scientist......Darin Kirkland JR, the guy with the photographic memory. I know that every time I hear an interview with one of our players they seem (beyond the Butchisms) very well spoken and articulate (and damn it, I don't care what color you/they are). Just wondering what everyone else thinks here. Butch seems to land a lot of high character, smart kids.

You know that's a good question lol. It always makes me giggle at people that are stunned at how well spoken some people are of various races. Heck, everybody is a product of their own environment doesn't matter what color they are. Intelligence, beauty, goodness, ect comes in many different shapes, sizes, and colors.

I guess it's like the white wide receivers that have great success. Some people seemed surprised in a way. I guess I just see a joke in about everything, particularly in peoples assumptions.

I do think this is a much more intelligent team overall. They are not only well spoken, but the majority are tremendous students. It is a new culture that I give Butch a lot of credit for. He's not recruiting near as many kids whose only objective is the NFL. Getting their degrees is a very important factor. Theses kids want to be winners and leaders in every aspect of life. Now we just have to see if championships can be won with kids with tremendous character as well. I personally would take the continuation of outstanding young men even if no national titles were the result. What he is building overall is something special. Call me crazy, but I'm not the win at any cost type of guy.

Hurd, Kirkland and Malone are Finance majors.

Sutton is Pharmacy/Pre-Med.

TKJr is Biomedical Engineering.

I'm sure there are others I missed but those are the ones I know off hand that are Jones recruits and meaningful starters. All but Sutton were also high rated (4*+) recruits.

Aerospace engineering uses the basic sciences and mathematics to develop the foundation for the design, development, production, testing, and applied research associated with aerospace vehicles. These vehicles include aircraft, spacecraft, and missiles."

That's from UTKs site. So, he will get courses in spacecraft. Also, the novelty of a major football player in any engineering field, much less aerospace, is too much for many to handle.

As an Aerospace guy myself I can bet you he wants to design the first space plane. I know that I would drop everything to design it. Don't know that I will see it in my lifetime but it will come.

You're right. I've also been impressed by the intelligence and character of the young men Butch has assembled on this team.

Its amazing how many of our best players are extremely intelligent and driven in their academics.

And yes you are right they are very well spoken especially compared to players on other teams.

Aerospace Engineering is simply Aeronautical Engineering with a course or two on Celestial Mechanics (how to get from one orbit to another) thrown in.

The same companies that design aircraft design spacecraft, by and large. Josh could easily jump back and forth from one project to another in his (post-NFL) engineering career.

So the short answer is, he's getting the education for both.


p.s. This truly is a very bright group of young men who make up Team 120. Real proud of them as people, not just as football players. And real proud of Butch & Co. for recruiting lads of character to be Volunteers.

At its most basic, an airplane (or rocket) is just three things: an engine; a compartment for the pilot, passengers and cargo; and an outer skin shaped to take advantage of aerodynamic principles.

So when you say that Pratt & Whitney don't design aircraft, you're wrong. They design and build a very important component of aircraft. They're just as much in the business as the guys designing and building the cabin or the skin, guys like McDonnell-Douglas or Boeing or Airbus.

This recruiting strategy is really smart. When you are trying to re-build a roster the last thing you need are academic washouts. I think in some past years we took chances on some kids who were marginal, and most of them left the program or were sent home, making the lack of depth worse. Having a guy like Bob Welton as Dir of Player Personnel has been critical to our recent success. He is able to look at a lot of kids and find those who have both good football skills and are also high character. This is a big part of Butch's "recruiting profile". Exhibit "A" is Corey Vereen, Computer Science Major. Not highly regarded out of HS (3*) but look where he is today, in all areas. You have to admit as a big-picture planner there aren't many coaches better than Butch. Once he gets the game day stuff tweaked the Vols will be set for a long, long time.

I think you are saying the 'specs of an engine'; not a specific engine?

Look at the F-16 for example. Roughly half the flight has General Electric F110 engines; half have Pratt & Whitney F100 engines.
