As a program during the reign of the 3 stooges, we definitely lost the winning program mentality that we had developed in the decades prior. It was totally gone. Heupel has brought it back at home but I don't think our players have alot of confidence on the road. Ultimately we have to remember though, that Nico developing into an elite QB was Plan A for this team. When that got derailed by the greed of those around him, the ceiling got lowered on this year. Joey has been better than expected but the bottom line is he's a bandaid. Gonna take more steam.Bama, UGA and UF just seem to make those "winning plays" at critical moments against us. We rarely do. Pucker factor high with the staff and team?
Joey didn’t call play action at the goal line with nine seconds and no TOs. He didn’t have us false start every time we go into hurry up in short yardage. Don’t think he asked the DBs to line up 15 yards from the line of scrimmage on third and two. Joey is likely an upgrade from Nico and we lucked into him in a year when the SEC seemingly has no elite teams. Completely wasted him.As a program during the reign of the 3 stooges, we definitely lost the winning program mentality that we had developed in the decades prior. It was totally gone. The goalline play obviously not only didn't work, but backfired in the worst way. So predictably all the Sunday morning quarterbacks want to question "the call". It's really not "the call" that is the issue, teams go play action in similar situations all the time, it's the result people are pissed about. Aguilar should have thrown that ball where only his guy had a chance at it OR if it wasn't there, thrown it away. Heupel is not an idiot, he has forgot more football, especially QB play, than most on this board know. I have no doubt those were Joey's instructions, Joey just didn't do it. That was the warning label that we got on Joey, on the upside he is a gunslinger and a gamer but on the downside he is prone to stupid turnovers at times. This was most disappointing for me. Joey may have been more hurt than we thought? That pick 6 turned the game to them and cost us 14 points. Three to make up before the game end would have been manageable. No sacks by our def or really good stops. Just not our night at all. But I’m disappointed for sure!!

Coaches do not routinely run in that situation. They most especially don’t when there was just a timeout and we come out in the exact same formation so you know DeBoer and company have told everyone to be looking for that kind of pass. It was absolutely terrible. Heupel does know more about football than most ever will, which makes him turning into a complete bonehead during high stress situations all the more ridiculous, but it happens over and over with him.The goalline play obviously not only didn't work, but backfired in the worst way. As to Nico, you will note I said "developing" Nico into an elite QB was Plan A for the 2025 Vols. From the moment we signed him, this year Nico's third season, was going to ride on him being that guy. He didn't become that guy, in fact, he's not even here anymore. Nico's the kind of guy who would have benefited from the old set-up. If he had stayed lean and hungry and worked hard, he'd have balled. Instead he was flushed with cash, and because of his entourage will probably never get the big NFL payday, and Tennessee never got the benefit of any of his potential.
The false starts are something you see on the road in this conference with most teams and credit to Bama, they had a tough atmosphere set up for us last night. The defense I agree with you on. Willie Martinez has been a garbage coach for 20+ years, I don't know how he keeps getting jobs, but it is past time to let him go and show Banks the door too if we have to in order to get Coach Willie away from our DB's.
That's always easy for somebody to say when something doesn't work. We all couch coach some but I'm sure you've been wrong before in your couch coaching and haven't announced it to board. Bottom line is if he threw it away, we'd have another play. Instead Joey did the one thing you absolutely, 100% could not do.Disagree. Once Alabama called timeout after seeing us in the heavy run formation, I was screaming for Josh to come back in a spread and get Joey on the move off the snap - give him multiple options and make sure we had two plays left.
I actually said to my wife to watch for the Kitzelman flair pass because they had run it a couple of times this year in the same spot. Clearly, Bama had scouted it and had the defense looking for it. Way too predictable, because running there was suicide and they knew it.
I hope you don’t really tell yourself this to cope. Blaming these two losses on JA is the worst take on this board. We’ve gotten better play from JA than we ever would have Nico. Play was terrible all around last night. Coaching included. As a program during the reign of the 3 stooges, we definitely lost the winning program mentality that we had developed in the decades prior. From the 2 yard line a run there can't be discounted. If this was from the 5, I'd agree with you. Whether we ran or passed, if it had worked, it would have been a "brilliant call", since it didn't work everyone thinks it was a bad call. I don't put much stock in all this after the fact second guessing unless I have previously seen a poster regularly criticizing plays that turn out well as "bad calls" also. Maybe you are such a person, I honestly don't recall your posting history, but there aren't many of them.Coaches do not routinely run in that situation. I think they just spawn.Nah the most disappointing part is thinking about all the mentally-challenged Bammer broodlings who'll emerge from the black viscous depths of their crimson egg sacks next July. Or however it is they procreate in Alabama. I don't watch Animal Planet so I don't know how it works down there.
I’m not really seeing the point. Calling a run from the 50 down 3 with five seconds in the game isn’t a genius call, even if the back breaks 30 tackles and scores. It’s a lucky call. That was a low percentage play and the play action fooled no one. From the 1 yard line a run there can't be discounted. If this was from the 5, I'd agree with you. I'm not a sunshine pumper. I am pretty down the middle. That was bad play from JA last night at the goalline. I'd bet anything he did exactly what he had been told not to. I didn't say anything about blaming him for 2 losses, I have been talking about that goalline play (as is obvious from my posts), take that strawman somewhere else.I hope you don’t really tell yourself this to cope. Guess who called that peewee play that should’ve never been called?I'm not a sunshine pumper. I am pretty down the middle. That was bad play from JA last night at the goalline. It wasn’t going to work, especially after a timeout, and the next play would have been a field goal, so it would still have been a wasted opportunity. And guess who wouldn't be b***hing about that play if it worked or if he threw it away and we scored on the next play? You guys. Hindsight makes geniuses of everybody.
It’s not that simple. It’s not just bitching because a play didn’t work. We called a run fake play on the GL when every person with a brain knew we weren’t running. Everyone except Heup I suppose. We served that up on a platter due to a bad pass and a bad play call. It was absolutely the one play you don’t call in that situation. And guess who wouldn't be b***hing about that play if it worked or if he threw it away and we scored on the next play? You guys. Folks are high if they put this on Joey A, try CJH and Joey H. Our quarterback took hits, stepped up and made some clutch throws. Mike Mathews had Butterfingers all night tonight. How many dumb ass passes to the sideline do they call when we could’ve been effectively running the ball? Our defense was not good, but our defensive plan was better than our offensive plan. Not squarely on Joey’s shoulders. This team can’t help but shoot itself in the foot constantly. That’s very concerning in game 7.
