The Mississippi State Postgame Report

1. CP84 - you are the freaking man. Well done sir! :salute:
2. Bray, Hunter, and Neal all had productive games and played well enough for us to win.
3. Shout out to the O-Line for playing another solid game against some good D-Linemen
4. Palardy appeared more comfortable in his situations today, I hope that becomes a trend
5. The rest is pretty much obvious.

I've had my signature since Dooley's first game here, and I've supported him the whole time. Tonight officially flipped the switch. He has done a good job restoring some talent and depth to the team, but we're needing a new coach to take us to the next step. All eyes on you Hart. :mf_surrender:

Edit: Signature has been edited.

1st Half

Special Teams: Not special at all (except CP). First half alone we had a 13 yard shank by Darr, a kickoff out of bounds by Palardy, ran into the kicker on a FG (luckily Mullen declined penalty), and Young muffed a punt (that we were fortunate enough to recover), and last but not least Rivera didn't catch a pooch kickoff and allowed State to recover. How the *&%$ does that that happen??? I have never seen that before in my life. Great KO return by Patterson.

Defense: One word, horrible. Beginning to remind me of Fulmer's last year when he hired Clawson, which I think is what did him in. Had a great D, but couldn't score on a high school team. Seems exactly the opposiate side of the ball this year. Dooley hires Sunseri, we have a really good offense but his defense couldn't stop a high school team. It's everything, blown coverages, continued getting beat on one-one coverages, no pressure from front 3 (or four), and if they play zone seems there are holes to throw in everywhere. Only forced one punt in first half and thats only because State was deep in own territory at the end of 2nd quater and played it safe.
Sunseri also shows his hand way too early. I am not a quaterback but I can tell if they are in zone or man pre-snap most the time. And when he does blitz, they show it way too early and the Offense adjusts. Bad play calling and seems the players don't have very good play discipline, which is also on the coaches.

Offense: Looked great first drive of game, then three 3 and outs and an interception. Patterson just watched safety Intercept the ball, could've fought for it and didn't. Chaney calls passes on 2nd and one and third and one, and on 3rd went deep at a corner and safety.

2nd Half

Special Teams: Complete turn around, a Jeckyl and Hyde. Made a FG, good coverages, Palardy had a 54 yard punt and a KO for a touchback.

Defense: Also a complete turn around and played much better second half. Sunseri made good halftime adjustments, and the defense had three 3 and outs. Moore dropped an Int. but they forced a punt anyway. BUT, they didn't hold State to a FG after the Young fumble. On the final drive, a missed tackle by Lathers allowed a first down, and allowed their best WR Bumphis to convert 2 other first downs. Again this is on Sunseri. The knock on Brewer is he can't cover, and he matched Bumphis on the 3rd and 8 via one on one coverage. Completely a dumb move by Sunseri.

Offense: The negatives is Neal got knocked out, status unknown at this time. The Young fumble was the game changing play of the second half. Down 3 and driving the ball effectively and Young gets stripped. Otherwise the offense played very good the second half.

SUMMARY: Defense and special teams again cost us another game. Its possible we could have only one loss right now if Wilcox was still here and he and Dooley could've worked together. I didn't really like Wilcox's still but you hav to admit it was way more effective than what we have to date. The first half, multiple errors on special teams and the defense just flat out getting it handed to them the first half proved too much to overcome. I am still not a believer in Sunseri. He may end up being Dooley's Clawson if they don't upset Alabama or USCe. 7-5 may keep him his job, IDK. But I don't think 6-6 does if he loses to any of the other 4. The offense is good enough to win all games, but not great enough or consistent enough to just outscore everyone.

Play of the game for TN: Patterson's KO return

Bone Head play of the game: Rivera for not fielding the KO

Play of the Game Overall: Banks strip on Young ultimately ended our comeback.

We scored 31 points on a good SEC defense and it wasn't enough to win...

I'd say this one is all on the defense...

Any 12 year old that plays football knows a kickoff is live. Get real. Even my wife knows it's a live ball. That's not coaching that's a brain fart on the player and the player alone coaching has nothing to do with that any more than coaching has to do with knowing you get 6 points for a touchdown.

The gameplan is up to the coaches, fundamentals are up to the coaches such as tackling, knowing where to be etc, but a fumble, dropped INT, a bad punt are on the individual players (you do realize that we got the number 1 ranked punter and kicker in the nation out of HS don't you). The kickers just stink. Not much you can do about that.

Special teams are a damn grease fire, but you're willing to chalk it up to just being a a "brain fart" on the part of a player.

Of course I know that we got the #1 ranked punter and kicker. And yet our special teams are still awful.

If on-the-field play doesn't count because that's all just player fsck-ups, what exactly do you think coaches do? Why are they there?

These are the reason for the lose.Young put it on the ground twice.Secondary is horrible. The big catch on the last drive wad defended by non other than Teague.Neals injury really hurt us.He had 9 carries for 40 yards and a TD.If he stayed in the game I really think the outcome would have been different. He and the Oline were wearing the dline down. The drop Int would have been a game changer.

I agree 100%, however the losing is getting old....geez

We just can not catch the breaks, Neal's injury was biggest turning point in the game. And Moore's drop was huge too. At end of the day we don't have guys who step up in the moment and seize control of it. That's not coaching, it only falls back on coaches because they are the ones who recruited them. Anyone in their right mind knows Young is not even a ACC running back, but he and Watson were all we had left apparently which is nothing game coaching controls. Sucks that we do stuff the right way, and NEVER get the good breaks.

No, no Dooley just wanted to play the 4th string tailback.....NOT. Lane has a concussion and Neal has something going on with his leg, thinking ankle right now.

Of course I am sure they were coached by dooley to hit a 12 yard punt, to fumble the ball and to not field a kickoff.

You have to play the cards you are dealt. Young did very well aside from the fumble. I was shocked at how well he ran the ball actually and then the fumble happened.

Yeah, and the Titanic sank itself.

Total up your excuses from the UF, UGA, and MSU games. Know what you've got?

0-3, and a bunch of excuses.

We scored 24 points on their defense

You're right it's been so damn long since we've run a kickoff back it doesn't seem likee it really happened..

Still, doesn't matter... It's on the defense...

Yes. There isn't any player on any team that doesn't know a kickoff is live. I would venture to say there isn't any player on any high school team that doesn't know this. It's not like Dooley would be shedding new light on him by telling him yesterday "hey kickoffs are live and you can't let the kicking team get them". Good Lord.

It's raining, I guess that's the coaches fault too. Makes about as much sense as blaming a player for his brain fart on something he has known since elementary school.

Well it all comes down to $hitty coaching. Anybody who lets Brent Brewer line up on Bunphis on a crucial 3 rd down shouldn't be coaching. Also, on another 3rd down you have Teague running 5 yds behind Bumhis again. Put the f-ing freshman in if we are going to play like this. Teague and Brewer shouldn't be on the field.

Maybe true....but if not them, then who?

In defense of Rivera, that MSU player had the advantage of running across midfield. He had momentum, and he knew that the ball was live. Rivera had no momentum, and he did not know.

He's on the kickoff return team, and doesn't know that the kickoff is a live ball?

There is no way in heck he didn't know that ball was live. Absolutely ZERO chance he doesn't know that after playing as much football as he has. He knew it, he just didn't act on it.

I cried. My son came back in my room crying saying we lose to everybody. He said he will get picked on at school because we suck.Next week will be ruff on him because we play bama and all the little kids are bama fans.It really hurt my heart.I told him who we play the rest of the way and he knew we would only beat Kentucky Troy And said maybe vandy and Missouri.

I am with you on this as well! Every game we seem unprepared and are always out coached!

I agree on the timeouts, and Marlin Lane, the rest two, but those two stick out. Dooley is Lame Duck. No way they are better than us. Failure to Keep Wilcox last year was a big mistake, and I blame Hart on that one.

I'm officially off the Dooley bandwagon.

That being said - when a West Coast guy quits UT to take a job on the West Coast, not sure how that is Dave Hart's fault.

Sirmon is West Coast too
