The Men that Killed UT Football

C’mon, you want donors to stop just so you can get some good seats. Fess up.

Good one :D

But, my family actually had season tickets for over 60 years. When it became clear that UT had given up on championship football, we gave up the tickets. And all other support.

I know. Every time I look at Clemson, I say, that could or should be us. Tahj Boyd was critical to getting their program going in the right direction.

And I still think Lane was completely FOS. He actually did an in home visit with Boyd, came back, and announced he had wanted to tell him in person that UT was not interested. I think that was horse manure. I think Boyd told Lane to go kick rocks and Lane lied to save face.

I mean, come on, it's Lane!

Never thought about that. No doubt LK is a liar and no ethics, but I always assumed he was actually dumb enough, or egotistical enough, to tell Tahj to walk. I was the biggest Tahj Boyd fan for 4 years; doing that to him was totally un-UT like and beneath any university with a pretense of having class.

I met this beautiful blonde Alaskan girl while in graduate school at CSU. This was the year I flew out to LA to watch us loose in the Rise Bowl and y’all know how that year ended. Later I married said women and live a great life in Montana. However I’ve been thinking about all that has happened to Tennessee athletics since I met my wife and can’t help but blame her. Yes it’s stupid but something starts a curse. I need it to be broken soon to protect my marriage.
Dang I miss the glory days.

I toyed with the idea of adding Fulmer to the list because this slide began under his watch.

Who am I forgetting?
Fulmer should be on the list and you should remove, Kiffin, Dooley and Jones...

I'd definitely say fulmer isn't to blame but it was absolutely the right decision to replace him when we did. of our last 4 seasons under him were sub .500. That's after having a ton of time to establish himself and bring in his type of players. The game had passed him by. Could you imagine saban or urban Meyer having a 4 year span where they lost more games than they won? Me either. Stop defending his coaching record. It was good in the 90's. But fell considerable afterwards.
But it's definitely not his fault. Now...I think it's absolutely ridiculous to have allowed him to make this most recent hire. Hiring a football coach is absolutely the most important part of an ads job. And how in the world a guy that was fired a decade early for not being able to keep up with the game made sent to hand the keys to...I'll never understand.
I get your point...but for the present it's a step in a new direction and hopefully a positive one. CPF isn't a Haslam puppet as we've witnessed for quite a while. Too much back-stabbing behind the scenes in the administration. I really hope some lessons have been learned. I'm not going to ramble on about the many things that most of us know already. I'm gonna be patient and trust in CJP. He's a rookie coach but so was Fulmer when he took his 1st HC gig. There's no secret and UT needs bigger, stronger, dedicated linemen up front on both sides of the ball. That's gonna take 2-3 years when you factor in conditioning development, etc. UT fans have to be patient and that concerns me more than anything. We'll get Bailey as the QB about the same time as these incoming linemen start to gel as a unit.

I hate to post on this thread and bring it back to Page 1, BUT...

I really don't get this hatred of the Haslams.

1. The patriarch chose to attend UT, after playing high school ball in Florida and being recruited by Neyland. He played on the 1951 NC team. He has contributed more to the University of Tennessee than any other person. He served on the UT Board of Trustees for many years. (I could argue that since he was not reappointed to the board nearly 18 years ago, things have been going downhill.) The man very obviously and genuinely loves the University of Tennessee and he loves the Vols and wants what's best for everything UT. 2. The older son attended and graduated from UTK. He is also a heavy contributor, and the company that his father created and that he now leads is a major sponsor of UT athletics. 3. The younger son attended and graduated from Emory University (he originally wanted to enter the ministry and UT does not have a school of theology or divinity) but he is also a huge supporter and contributor and and frequently attends Tennessee games. I won't even begin to list all the things at UT bearing the family name.

So WHY do you think "the Haslams" want to destroy the football program? What would be the motive?

PS -- I'm not affiliated with them in any way (okay, I do occasionally fill up with Pilot gas and coffee when I'm on the road, but other than that, nothing). I'm just a proud alumnus of UT who very much appreciates what they have done for it. Nothing more.
I get your point but it seems to be a control thing. A good CEO simply surrounds himself with folks that get things done. I sense they work scared while knowing a black cloud hovers over their head. It happens everywhere all the time but enough is enough. Jim Haslam isn't football savvy, he's in the way.

Can't like this post enough. It wouldn't bother me to see Orgeron run over by a truck.
His days at LSU are numbered just like Gus. Give a coach 4-5 years and all the resources that money can buy and everyone expects the next year to be better than the last. It's as about as fair as it's gonna get down south. Coaching changes are hell to go thru though. UT needs to fiqure out how 1- UGA made such a smooth transition 2- How UF recently went through their transition rather smoothly.
I think Botch Jones did a lot more damage than good ever since the Tex A&M game of '16. Hart retiring and Currie being new actually gave him another year to destroy even more of the program. It's hard to believe that no one saw this disaster in the making.

1. Mike Hamilton
2. Dave Hart
3. John Currie

Of all these, Currie bugs me the most. Only here for a year but he was the most overtly and ridiculously incompetent. It’s like we went and found some arrogant frat boy with an associate’s degree in horticulture and no athletic experience since being 1989 little league square dancing conference quarter finalist and made him the AD.

That image of Currie with his “mean face” on standing in the field after that final Butch Jones loss was laughable. So clearly staged - he was posing for the cameras, as if to show how outraged he was. The guy was a joke and made us more of one than we already were.

Butch won an SEC Title this year, with players Pruitt recruited. Pruitt is setting at the house this year, with players Lyle recruited.

You have to add negavols to the top of the list. Too many spoiled negative “fans”. Probably only program that will ever fire a HOF NFL talent producing coach with a NC championship team with two SEC championships one year following winning his 5th SEC East title in 10 years. He was trying to make some changes to his offense which had worked pretty damn well up to that point. Sure he may have had to eventually go, but he deserved more time. What few know is that it wasn’t so much the wins and losses that led to his demise, it was money. Our fans stopped showing up and our boosters were torn over this, so they had to let him go to save the University. That is what he was illuding to when talked about stepping down in his resignation speech. He just had too much class to say anything. I also believe that, as much as I couldn’t stand his slogans and his lack of accountability, think Jones’ would have won more games in Dobb’s final year had he retained his original staff, but people were screaming fore our coaches when we lost close games that we never should have been in like the Bama and Oklahoma games. These kids were robbed and we cannot afford to recycle coordinators/staff the way we did under Butch. I think he had three OCs and two DCs during his time there. Negavols are definitely a huge factor.

Is there something special about merkins in Montana?

Butch was never going to do anything special here. Period. Dude is a micromanager that lacks the X and O knowledge to beat good coaches. I was at the OK game, and everyone in that stadium knew we were going to blow it the minute Butch decided to sit on the lead like a moron. Butch proved that day he couldn’t hold the jockstrap of good college coaches.

In terms of Negavols, UT has put out a crap product for going on 10 years. If Nike put out crap shoes for ten years, you think people would still go crazy every year when they release a new product? Yet, every year UT fans go crazy over a new team fully knowing we are going to suck against good teams. I’d say that’s a pretty strong indication that we have some of the best fans on the planet.

The best football years in UT history were also under Fulmer’s watch.

We would have been better and that is my opinion and it is grounded in fact. Nothing was ever enough. After first year as college HC Kiffin abandoned our program and then hiring Fooley, We were competing in year 3 with the best. We lost to OK who ended up ranked 15 by EOY by 1 TD at the end of the game, Florida who ended up ranked #10 by EOY 1 point at the end of the game and to Saban who ended up #4 by EOY by 5 points with a chance to win it, but we fumbled on a game winning drive. But we beat a ranked Georgia team and a ranked Northwestern team that ended up in the top 25. For anyone to have had higher expectations than that from his staff in year three was insane and unrealistic and that is why Pruitt wanted 5 years. Frankly, I don’t think we challenge for an SEC Championship for another 4 years. Pruitt didn’t inherit anything worse than Butch.

Butch was doing something right and he was pressured to change staff and he did and that is why I wasn’t fond of him. He caved in games, caved on the mic, and he caved in coaching decisions. Still, he may have done something much bigger if he was able to retain his initial staff, but the Negavols wanted more and his best players left early. Of course they did! Nothing was ever enough!

Speaking of XOs and being at the game, you can see more on TV than you can in the stands. You can also, pause, rewind etc. That is why OCs have started to coach from booths.

Again, Negavols stopped showing up at games and had Fulmer fired one year after winning the SEC East. Not three years. Not seven years. Not ten years. ONE. No proven coach has wanted to work here since and many our once spoiled, still negative fans have everything to do with it.

1. But what EVIDENCE is there that they began to micromanage or even interfere -- or is it just speculation?
2. If "Big Jim" said he wants UT to be known as "an academic school that also plays football, like Virginia," I'm very glad to hear that. That's the way this alum wants it.
So you would rather us be a f***ing bridesmaid instead of a bride? Okay then.
