They will never be good for any length of time, just a season here or there no matter who the coach is. There are just too many things working against them. They would be better served in another conference for football.

ACC would be a great fit for Vanderbilt too bad the SEC can't trade them for North Carolina,North Carolina State or Clemson.

Vandy will never be good in the SEC consistently because they cant recruit well enough. Their biggest problem now, aside from a talent deficiency is they have a good defensive coordinator but no head coach... Hiring a good OC is not going to fix that unless maybe the guy has head coach experience and vandy pulling a guy like that isn't likely. You need someone who can oversee both and bring the two together and put together a competent game plan. They will never get that with Derek Mason...
