On December 19, 1813, Vanderbilt married his first cousin, Sophia Johnson
What a sick perve.
I'm actually going to defend this, because it wasn't until after the Civil War that marrying cousins started to become taboo and the practice still continued in the U.S. fairly commonly until the 20th century. FDR married his first cousin.
It's still pretty common in North Africa, the Middle East, and India. There is a slightly higher risk for genetic defects but no more than the risk that women 40 years old or older take in giving birth.
Cousin marriage today is not socially acceptable, but back then it was.

I know it's been mentioned on here, but I have to reiterate that I am so impressed by how much better CDM is communicating this summer. Watching his press conference today is refreshing and inspiring. I always assumed he was a smart guy but now it is finally coming through. I now actually believe that he understands what went wrong last year and might be able to reach the players now.
I'm still terrified that we might come out as unprepared as last year and flop. That said, if the wideouts and qb's have improved as much as CDM's speaking skills, we'll be contenders in the East.
Half of the first six threads on VolNation are about Vandy. jmo... but I really think it's time that some of ya'lls obsession with Vanderbilt comes to an end. Dooley is no longer here, and Franklin is no longer at Vanderbilt and they are certainly not a rival, so why the apparent fixation?
