The meltdown that is happening on the Vandy message boards

Well considering the head man already left he really didn't have many options

Yeah, I guess he's willing to take the job and earn an easy paycheck for a year before jumping to another position in 2016 when the entire staff gets canned.

Or maybe he's willing to audition for the HC job himself.

This. He's a dead man walking.
No, he's not. I like Mason. Stanford is a well-coached team. Problem is, he had to start from ground zero, with all the decommits that followed Franklin's departure.

Mason is going to have to build that roster back up and once done, they will be a pesky program to deal with. If I am Mason, I am banging the table constantly to get some MAJOR upgrades to Vandy's stadium. That thing is like an out-house compared to Neyland and other stadiums in the conference.

Some of the snobby Vandy donors need to break out the big checkbook to help make it happen. It's hard to compete on the SEC recruiting front with Sun Belt Conference facilities.

You gotta be kiddin me. He is a dead man walking. How is he gonna build at roster up when he is recruiting like garbage? This will be e 2nd bad class. He has about 3-4 players each in the first two classes. They have awful skill players, suspect QBs, and a DL that is pretty thin. They will now have their 3rd OC and DC in three yrs. Their schedule next yr features Texas A&M, Ole Miss, Western Kentucky and Houston to go along with the SEC East. He will be gone After next season and leave them with an awful roster.

You forget, Vandy has a history with losing. They will not find a better HC anytime soon. They got lucky with Franklin, who was more of a recruiting BS'er than a good coach.

I'm not saying Mason will recruit lights out. I'm saying he inherited a freakin mess because of Franklin's departure. And IF he can build the roster back up, he could be a good coach. Again, it ain't like he came from TSU or Austin Peay. Standford was a Top 10 program when he left to take the job.

He came from Stanford and had never been a HC. He's not building the roster up. He will leave it in worse shape than what he found it. He is filling up on MAC and Ivy League players with a couple SEC players sprinkled in. It's getting worse if anything and it's happening fast. Now their players have to learn from a third OC and DC in as many years. I don't see it getting better at all. It's still a Complete mess.

I see what you're saying, but there's absolutely NOTHING from Mason's first year that suggests he's even remotely close to being a competent head coach or capable of building up a roster. His recruiting is atrocious.

The fact that Vandy played UT close is more indicative of their overall hatred of all things orange and our beat up roster than the light turning on for Mason.

Pretty solid hires in my opinion with an OC from a Power conference that has a history of putting up points and a DC that has SEC experience in recruiting and coaching. McGriff is a high energetic guy that hopefully can recruit the parts he knows. Supposedly Mason called the defensive gameplan against UT (not sure on that) and if so why didn't he step in earlier and do that, but regardless both have some experience at high level jobs and are more qualified then I expected Vandy to get at this stage.

Mason will get another year if he can at least keep Vanderbilt competitive in the SEC games without any more blowouts.

I hope so....there will be plenty of tickets to be had in two years

I still think Mason's approach on offense isn't going to work out well at a school like Vandy. A properly executed spread option offense helps negate talent differences. I just don't see Mason being able to recruit the depth and talent at OL and RB that he'll need to line up in the I-formation and run it down other teams' throats.

I do think that if he stays much more involved in the defense like he did leading up to the UT game that the defense will be solid.

Good points. I don't think we know what style of offense Mason wants to run for the QB carousel that Dorrell implemented in benching Robinette when we were tied with Temple at 7-7 all started. Mason had about 1 week to hire an OC at that time and he hoped a guy with the Head Coaching pedigree of Karl Dorrell he would be able to lead the offense.
The new OC opened up more than usual at Wisconsin and he will have to open it up more at Vanderbilt because Vandy will never have the OL that Wisconsin can bring in.
