The meltdown that is happening on the Vandy message boards

Scheu has been brutal this yr and Sims is ok. Im not buying Sherfield at all. Hes been awful lately and he has like 45 catches but 16 or so came against austin peay and like half of his total yards did as well

You don't think the lack of receiver production is directly attributable to the quarterback play? Those three guys can play anywhere imo. Not saying start anywhere but they have talent.

I wonder if it's even possible for Vandy to have a decent offense under Mason not just next year, but ever. Their recruiting is atrocious and once Ralph Webb is gone, their offense will be even worse than it is now.

They are basically right back to the Woody Widenhofer years. Having a good defense with Mason is their only hope of making a bowl game. Force teams into hideous low-scoring games and hope you get a turnover or something to win it.

If I were Vandy I would run some wishbone variation on offense. They will never have the talent or depth to run a pro style offense in the SEC.

Have to admit that before the Mizzoo game, I circled the Vandy game as one where they would be somewhat competitive (based on the last 4 years), 2-2, and only a one score difference in each UT win. Now after watching our defense against Mizzoo I fully expect this to be a shutout. I know Mizzoo's O is hot trash - but so is vandy's. Vandy's d is okay but not the same as Mizzoo. Hurd and Kamara should both surpass the 100 yard mark and hoping like hell Cam houses another PR.

i wouldnt go that far. They couldnt play anywhere. Obviously they have talent but i dont think they are that great. Ive seen so many balls hit Sherfield right in the hands and dropped them. Last weekend was an example of that. They cant actually throw the ball at VU. They are all screen passes. Sorta like us but worse. Caleb Scott has been their more steady WR down the stretch. He got knocked out Saturday though. Im not saying they dont have any talent or that they cant play. But the only 3 players i would want from them are Weatherly, McGaster and Cunningham. Maybe Jay Woods bc he is decent. I would take Webb also if he was gonna be my 2nd or 3rd back somewhere.

That's why I think Shurmer (even though I gave him hell a few posts back) is a decent QB. And in a good program with proper coaching and a good O Line, could end up being a solid contributor to an offense.

He comes from a good pedigree and seems to have a good arm. But playing as a true freshman behind that joke of an O line and with limited mobility is hindering his abilities.

I saw the end of the replay yesterday on SECN, hard to believe vandy wore those light gray unis vs aTm in white with with some kind of gray-ish helmet.

Hence why Mason is an idiot.

His game plan is to shorten the game and win with his defense. Problem is he wants to run a power run offense like Stanford and Alabama. Compound this problem with the fact that he can't recruit the players he needs to run that type of system. Also add in the fact that his first OC's (Dorell) philosophy is based on the west coast offense. So he wasted an entire year and recruiting cycle with a coach who doesn't run Mason's preferred offense.

He had a chance to correct this in the offseason, but hired a coach whose success came with a prolific RB and stout OL. Again, Vandy doesn't have either.

Running the triple option fits his philosophy and personnel and recruiting limitations. It's hard to prepare for in a short week. It shortens the game by controlling possession. It allows the defense to rest.

If Mason had hired a triple option OC, I wouldn't be surprised if Vandy won 6 games this year with the defense he has. He's comically in over his head. I love it!!!

some nuggets. Some of them are trying to refer to their defense as the "Black Death Defense" lollerable

and this from cjdore
The answers to Vanderbilt's woes are not that difficult. VU collects $30MM from the SEC each year. We could start by using 5-6MM of that in luring a high quality, high visibility Coach. If VU has traditionally had any degree of quality on the field it has been on the defensive side of the field....Woodyball to now. The missing piece seems to be a dynamic offense that would excite a young recruit to come here. A run run pass type offense will not cut it. We pride ourselves on recruiting true student athletes but never seem to be able to use the smart athletes to have an unpredictable offense. So steps are clear:

1) Hire big time Coach with SEC bounty
2) Institute high flying, unpredictable offense
3) Keep great defense
4) Complete bowl and add upper level seats to handle ticket demand.
bwhahahahaha on the bolded. as for the rest, that is a bland recipe that could be applied anywhere and it would hold true.

Now will Vandy football ever be as popular as the Titans? Probably not. The Titans preseason games get better TV ratings and attendance than any Vandy game. But both can coexist peacefully, and there are many fans of both teams, just like me.
I am glad that all the Vandy fans are not chasing the Titans out of Nashville.

oh no bubbadog didn't
Foster was the antithesis of Pat Summitt. He was a great coach, but he didn't have to be a screaming maniac in order to succeed. Most of Pat's former players have a love-hate relationship with her at best, and often it's just a hate-hate relationship. She was willing to put her own unborn child at significant risk in order to make a recruiting trip. Foster wasn't as successful, but he did things the right way. Frankly, I would rather have a coach who succeeded at his level than one who achieved much more but had to be a Pat Summitt type in order to do it. Principles mean something.

If the measure of facility improvement is ticket demand, Vandy ought to set up a couple of 4 row aluminum bleachers at Centennial Park. They still won't sell out, but at least the stands will look more full than they are now.

He better be able to put chicken wings on that young man and hope he can fly because I don't see him being able to run in the SEC.

He would have been better off committing to Richmond,James Madison or William&Mary. He'll take a beating at Vandy. I can't see why he would turn Navy down for Vandy:eek:hmy:
