In my opinion, there are 4-5 things a coach/leader needs In order to run a successful program, business, etc.
1. Great people skills specifically in communication. This comes into to play with your fellow coaches, in the living rooms of recruits and their parents and in front of cameras speaking to the fans of the team you coach.
2. Relentless recruiter with an emphasis on truth not hype.
3. Ability to recognize your own deficiencies as a coach and hire assistants who are excellent in those areas.
4. Grasping the reality of big moments and embracing them rather than downplaying them.
5. An equal amount of personal humility, daily gratitude, teachability and work ethic.
I know many of you already know these things and to be honest, this was just a way for me to vent. I love my VOLs and many of my fondest childhood/teenage year memories were games I attended. But at the end of the day, it is just a game and these are just young men. I hope the best for them. Now Butch on the other hand, he appears to have an arrogant, prideful, entitled and overwhelmed demeanor. He doesn't appear to meet my standards for a good coach. I don't know who'd replace him as some of the greats lost questionable games this year but even in those losses, then showed up the rest of the year. Here's to a brighter future. Hopefully sooner than later.
