The Mandalorian

How old were you when you first saw it? The vast majority of parents in the 70s thought it was silly and humored their kids’ obsession with it. They had no idea their kids would carry it with them into adulthood.
I was young but even today it doesn't feel like a kid movie, especially Empire. Luke nearly freezes to death, gets dismembered, etc. I know there are some action in the prequels like Maul getting halved, but overall still feels like something that would work much better as a cartoon

I read about half of that and it was funny... then I returned to my default stance that some people put too much thought into a series that was made for 8-12 years olds. It’s not deep. It was never intended to be deep.

I really don't agree the series is made for 8-12 year olds; at least not until ROTJ when Lucas saw dollar signs with the Ewoks. There's no way you can watch ANH and TESB and think those were made for kids that young. And honestly I don't really buy the series overall is. Parts of it, yes, evidenced by the toys, rides, etc. But there is way too much dark stuff going on to completely say it's aimed at 8-12 year olds, especially in the ones like TESB and Rogue One. Rogue One is basically about a suicide mission.

I never felt like the originals were meant solely for kids until halfway through Jedi. It was like Lucas woke up one morning and realized "wait, I have the toy rights on this stuff!"

And even then I'd only say the Ewok part is "kid"; the rest is still relatively adult.

Guys... just because something is meant for kids doesn’t mean it has to be childish. Lucas said from the outset of ANH that this was a modern adventure serial for 8-12 year olds.

There are dark themes in all kinds of kids movies from that era. Ever watched Dark Crystal, Labrynth, or Secret of Nym? It’s really just simple good vs evil.

It’s worth noting that what constitutes “kid” movies has changed quite a bit since the 70s and 80s. What was G rated back then is PG now. And PG has been bumped up to PG-13. I think Lucas’ sensibilities changed along the way as well. He became a father between ANH and ESB. By ROTJ his daughter was very young and that heavily influenced him. As it did when she was a teen while making the prequels (remember the rumor NSYNC was going to get a cameo as Jedi).

I’m not disagreeing that things like young Anakin and Jar Jar aren’t annoying to my adult self, but I’m also not going to pretend Star Wars was ever meant to be deeper or more grown up than it was.

I'd love to see the numbers on people that removed D+ after Mando ended. Twitter was buzzing about it, but who knows how representative that was? There is no way I'd be keeping it rn if I weren't getting it for free.
You must not have kids (not surprised :p)
I think it’s being exaggerated

With all due respect....Lucas says a lot of things.

I think the point myself and others are trying to make is that the first two releases weren't childish, and then RotJ was. The first two movies felt geared for the widest audience possible, then they started pandering.

I get that... Doesn’t change that Lucas’ intentions were for younger audiences from the beginning. I agree he leaned into harder as the series went on. I also stand by my statement that the parents of the era, who were most likely in their 30s and 40s, thought the whole thing was silly from the beginning. And the grandparents? I remember my grandfather falling asleep in EMPIRE!!

There are only a few areas I think went too far. Ewoks, Jar Jar, and young Anakin. The rest of the prequels’ problems are unrelated to being too childish.

I think with young Anakin he was going for a Macaulay Culkin/Home Alone angle. Something that related to little kids while still being cute to adults. I’m not saying it was executed well.

Jar Jar and the Gungens in general are the worst offenders of ridiculous cartoon characterizations.

As for the Ewoks, anyone who saw that movie while under the age of 10 who says they always hated them is a flat out liar. The Ewoks were so popular they had 2 TV movies and Saturday morning cartoon that lasted 2 seasons (The toys to the cartoon are still some of the most sought after of that era). When Disney MGM first launched the old Star Tours ride back in the late 80s they picked Endor as the back drop so they could trot out Ewoks around the park. People retroactively hate on Ewoks. Personally I loved them as a kid. Hated them in my teens and 20s. Came back around to accepting them in my 30s. Whereas Jar Jar and young Anakin have been basically reviled since day 1.

Well, I don't care about his intentions. My only point is that the movies were good and then they weren't.

Fair enough... I don’t think the main problem for dip in quality is that they went to childish though. ROTJ is still great despite the awkwardness of the Ewoks in the 3rd act. The prequels suffered from a litany of problems. And the sequels have suffered without any over abundance of cartoonyness.

Yeah, but I think the problem with RotJ is more than just Ewoks. Boba Fett is one of the coolest characters in the SWU, and he dies because of an action that was written for slapstick comic relief. I can't think of anything disappointing like that in ANH or Empire, but it's been a while since I've seen them.

And Chewy doing the Tarzan yell.

I call BS. How many years between the original trilogy and the pretril? How much more budget than when ANH was made? Lucas had an incredible opportunity and **** the bed.

Other than the cartoon CGI, bad acting, bad story and JarJar, the thing I hated most was how pathetic they made Yoda look. I love this guy's hilarious take on him
Why Yoda Is the Most Useless Character in the 'Star Wars' Universe
I actually really agree. I watched II-VI over the last two nights and couldn’t help but feel Yoda was so egregiously underutilized throughout. Like C’mon. He’s the Grand Poobah of the Jedi’s and yet doesn’t ever win a substantial duel. He should’ve defeated Dooku. That would’ve been enough for me. And how the hell do none of the Jedi’s on the council feel Darth Sidious’ energy sooner? Yoda feels all the struggle within Anakin - especially after Anakin murders the sand people - and yet he offers no guidance whatsoever. Yoda is supposed to be the strongest Jedi out there. He tells Luke that the Light side of the force can be and is stronger than the Dark side, yet Yoda can’t beat any of these dudes! I think I’d be jumping over to the Dark side! Yoda is FOS! 😆

Is it worth watching? Not a huge animation guy but I'm very intrigued. Aside from Voltron, I have trouble staying interested

I saw the movie when it first came to home video. I was not impressed and ignored the show for years. When it came to Netflix I started watching them with my kids and ended up loving it.

The storylines flesh out the prequels so much better. It takes a little bit to get into but once it settles in it is surprisingly good.

The animation is ok for its time. It was also a TV budget.

Those who can, do. Those who can’t, teach. LOL

I thought the way the Force was handled in the original was much better than the prequels. The force can be used on non force users differently than those who force sensitive, physically and mentally (storm troopers for example). Yoda’s character in the prequels just wasn’t very good and the writing was not well researched or consistent.

Consider R2D2 having built in jets. Think that would have come in handy later.

I was the same until I was forced to watch it with my kid. It's solid.

Considering the Force was made up by George Lucas I don’t think you could say it wasn’t well researched for the prequels.

But I agree the Force is not very consistent. It gets really weird in in Clone Wars.

Made up, but Lucas was borrowing much of this. Lots of new age stuff in there. A screenwriter has an obligation to be consistent with his own story.
