You watch Wilcox the last couple of years? Thats what you should be basing your opinion on, not in the Pac.
The truth gets lost in perception sometimes, OP.
I watched it as well. Stanford is not some run of the mill, non-SEC quality program. If you think so you need to work on your football IQ. Many of the teams in the SEC could not beat USCw. Stanford did. They are as big or bigger than Bama. They do not have the playmakers Bama has, but they are physcially strong and very disciplined in what they do. They were favorably compared to having similar size as the NFL 49'ers, while running similar schemes. Wilcox's D was innovative and fast. They blitzed and played tough man coverage. There were more 3 & outs by their D in the first half than we saw in a year with us. The reason is obvious. The players have sold out to his system and they have recruited the players to play the system. So not getting enough of the right players at UT for the system and all of the players not selling out may be why they did not do as well in the SEC. So who is responsible for making sure that happens?
Or you can continue to live in the world of perception. The head coach makes the final call on what system he wants to run and the type players he wants to recruit before he hires a DC most of the time. He communicates his plan to the AD and other parties before he is even hired. Dools did that as well.
Correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't Wilcox the DC for the LSU, Bama, Ark game last year? And in 2010 Oregon, UF, Bama, UGA, and SC?
I'll take Sal any day of the week and twice on Sunday.
Watching the great gameplay JW had last night made me realize that his departure may have indeed been the most crushing blow to DD and his ability to get this turned around. Most of us think SS was a great hire but reality is a new defensive scheme was destined to take some time to implement. Let's hope SS can lesson the growing pains process but IMO JW would have given DD a much better shot at survival this season.

yea because the depth and the lack of talent had nothing to do with how bad our defense played the last 2-3 years. Please....give me a break.

I would say the cardinal is pretty close to SEC quality.
I was a big Wilcox fan, and a sirmon (sp?) fan, think DD fulmered him up at times. May be I am wrong time will tell.
