Watching the great gameplay JW had last night made me realize that his departure may have indeed been the most crushing blow to DD and his ability to get this turned around. Most of us think SS was a great hire but reality is a new defensive scheme was destined to take some time to implement. Let's hope SS can lesson the growing pains process but IMO JW would have given DD a much better shot at survival this season.

In the long term I would much rather have SS but we all know DD doesn't have the luxury of thinking past this year which JW gave him a better shot.

Would you disagree that he beat an SEC type offense last night?

Type maybe. Not quality.
Recruit 5th or 6th in the SEC, season in season out, it's where you end up.
Wilcox may wins some games where he is.
Happy for him, but it ain't even close to the SEC.

I could make a strong arguement that Stanford is one of the most physical offenses in the country and stopping that was something most thought JW couldn't do.

I wasn't pleased to see Wilcox jump ship, but I've heard that he didn't get along all that well with Dooley. The SS Troops are taking longer than most of us had hoped to adapt to his method, but hopefully we'll soon have a defense that never rests.

Go Vols!

The Wilcox haters are just ignorant pips overflowing with arrogance. JW didn't have the heft needed in his DL. He didn't have (and we still don't have) the corner pursuit speed needed. He didn't have a mature crop of players and made do with a lot of freshmen. The pips will never understand that Tennessee was (and still is in many ways) an undermanned team. We play in what is the most unforgiving conference in the nation. I'm glad Coach Sal Sunseri is here and wouldn't want to lose him anytime soon. But I also believe if JW was still here that defense would be playing better than last year's unit. About as good if not better than this unit. Simply because we have more experience and somewhat better personnel.

[Let the hating begin]

LSU put 41 up on his D this year. I like CJW and I was sorry to see him go but let's don't make him the greatest coach in the world just cause he's gone. We have some growing pains to work through

Its typically right the opposite. He sucks now because he left.

Truth of the matter. There's nothing Dooley can do about the growing pains. When you have to replace a complete D staff and 7 total coaches thats gonna happen. His problem is this is year 3 and the expectations are different than 2 years ago.

wilcox was never going to work here regardless of the amount of talent we had... whenever we needed a stop we could not get it and multiple teams had over 90 yard drives on us without throwing the ball one time and when teams did throw the ball we got roasted deep...we had the only bend don't break defense that bent and broke and that wasn't going to change any time soon

This is not wrong.

With Wilcox, I think we beat Florida. Which would have helped CDD's survival chances immensely.

Doh-ley's got to make something happen quickly now, and he's all out of moral victories (not that he had many of those).

Wilcox is gone, so forget about him. I'm glad he's gone & we have the type of coach & man that understands SEC offenses/defenses. As most of us understood, the players learning & responding to the 3-4 defense is a process...but there seems to be progress. Now if we can just get some SPEED in the secondary.

4 games = taking too long to adjust to the new D?
UGA was not good the first yr they switched to the 3-4.
AL was not good the first yr they switched to the 3-4.

It takes at least a yr to get comfortable with a switch to the 3-4, you should see improvement as the season goes on, but hoping to have it down after only 4 games is completely unrealistic, but such is most of the fan base today.
