Interesting article on ESPN's NASCAR pages this morning:

NASCAR - transforming Bristol for football will be a big deal

Some eye-popping factoids, like these:

Bristol has yet to say what type of turf it will have for the game. The field will be built in eight days, with about 8,500 tons of rock -- 400 truckloads hauled over three days -- used for the base. The rock will be 3 to 6 inches deep in the middle, tapering to 1 to 1½ inches on the sidelines for drainage.

Because the game is a Vols home game, the track has worked with Tennessee on many of the logistics, such as the location of the play clocks. They will be on video boards on the suites and in the Turn 1 and Turn 3 corners on the field on scaffolding.

I thought I heard where field turf would be used. Maybe they have decided between AstroTurf or Field Turf.

I think it only looks low because your eye is being tricked.

Look at it again while focusing on the fact that the big screens are each as tall as a 3-story building (30'). That puts the height above field level into better perspective. It is WAY up there.

Agreed. I bet the attendance will be much less if its a rainy evening.

Hopefully the field works out well.

So many things can go wrong installing a football field for the first time and having zero or very little time to test it and fix it.

i hope the field works out as well.

Just curious..what kind of things could go wrong that highly trained engineers and turf-grass managers could not foresee and test for.

i am just curious!

I am excited for the game, but I have a feeling something pretty important is going to go wrong in their planning. Hope I am wrong and everything goes smoothly and Tn comes out with the win.

EDIT: I see others have posted same concern, just add me to the list, because like said, this has not been tested before.

Thats a good question, you can look for that answer but wont find it, just specs on the videoboard.

I did pick this up though, some locals posted on another board that the support towers are 190-220' tall, and
that the board would be 100-110' off the field. Finding official verification will be difficult.

and this is from BMS.

Colossus will be suspended by 117 tons of cabling, and BMS will have the ability to raise and lower the structure depending on the event.

I read earlier that it is about the height of the board at the Cowboy's stadium, so should be OK. :thumbsup:

Fair question. I was at the Eagles/Ravens pre season game where it was canceled due to the turf. Brings up bad memories. I know that was like jeez, I think 12 years ago now but recently Houston Texans had problems with their field be too hard. Now it's been redone and it's been pretty atrocious in the Copa America that's being played now

My guess for worse case scenraio would 1] it being to hard2] having seems or having sloping problems.
