The logical events that could occur to keep Butch for 2018

You lost me at “win on the back of Shoop.” Since when has Shoop been reliable? In fact, Shoop’s defenses have been a dismal failure. The offense was actually outstanding last year, the defense has been terrible for Shoop’s entire tenure. There won’t be any future winning on the back of Shoop.

You do realize that an inept offense that can't move the ball downfield, can't score touchdowns and constantly is off the field with multiple 3 and outs will lead to defense fatigue and eventually collapsing.

Disclaimer: I am not for this, I want him gone, but this is a strong possibility.

A scope goat has to be had, the obvious choice is Scott. Scott gets fired, Currie gives Butch an ultimatum to either go get a top tier OC and let him run the offense or he will be fired as well. Butch is stubborn not stupid, butch goes and hired a top tier OC to push this offense off the ground.

With pieces in place Butch could easily win 10 next season on the backs of Shoop and new OC. I think this move would push butch into an elite status where he can do team management and Recruiting.

Butch Jones couldn’t “easily win 10 games” if you gave him Tom Brady and the New England Patriots roster and the entire schedule was playing the Cleveland Browns at home every week.

Btw, since when is Shoop all of a sudden a great OC again? We gave up 45 points, 35 first downs and 604 yards yesterday. Currently 78th in total defense and 69th in the nation in scoring defense.

And you do realize that just because your offense goes 3 and out, it doesn’t mean that your defense isn’t allowed to do likewise and force a 3 and out or 2 itself. Ever heard of a defensive struggle? That typically happens when you’re playing a good defense and you have a good defense yourself.

Just because your offense is struggling, it doesn’t mean your defense is just destined to give up 600 yards and 40 points.....unless Bob Shoop is your DC. Football 101.

You are simply delusional if you think Butch could ever win 10 games here now with any coaching staff. You probably think they will win out and go 8-4 this year. Words such as train wreck or dumpster fire do not begin to describe this situation now. Can't Currie see that as well?

There is no scenario in which Butch Jones is coaching UT in any capacity in 2018 that has any foundation whatsoever in logic.

The UT coaching swamp needs to drained . Not only Butch and Scott , but Walt Wells , OL coach . The strength of the team back in August was supposed to have been this dominant offensive line . Hope Cade Mays doesn't de-commit .

Well, the goal here is to make UT a winning respectable program again. I firmly believe Butch's inablility to adapt and hire a big time OC is what has and will end his head coaching status.

If he hires a big time guy and we start winning then fine, but my guess is the inept coaching runs deeper than butch. If it didn't you'd see developed talent and bad in game coaching.

No one in their right mind would work for this guy. Unless no one else will hire them

Um yes, I’m a Gator fan, I know this better than anyone. But what about last year when UT’s offense was scoring points at will but losing shootouts? What about this year against GT when the offense was rolling and was forced to win a shootout because the defense couldn’t stop me or you? What about against Florida this year when UT’s offense had Florida’s defense reeling in the 4th quarter but the defense gave up a drive to Florida and a desparation heave?

How can anyone watch the last two years of Shoop and see anything worth hanging on to?

We can only hope our in state commits have a sense of loyalty.

A dead man walking will not be able to hire a top OC. No way, no how.

Not so fast. An up and comer of an OC might be an alternate solution. Come in, save day or come in step in as interim HC if things go south.

It's time to move on to Ky. We need to win this game.

Go Vols!

Wait?! Elite and Butch Jones in the same sentence?

You keep Butch and you will see an economic impact to UT. As that appears to be all they care about, that might be what it takes to get him gone. I think he would take almost any job at this point though just to get out of town.

Agreed but if I'm Butch, UT pays me and my family in full.

I don't place blame on Butch for anything that happened in the first two yrs. He took over a complete mess in every area.

Unfortunately the coaching blunders since the start of yr 3 are too much for me to overlook. Kicking a fg on 4th and 1/2 yd vs OU, the 2015 Florida debacle, the total meltdown of 2016, the mismanagement of the time clock in Florida this yr, again vs SC, etc. The refusal to run any form of power football in a power football league, pitiful selection of staff, etc. tells me there is no logical reason to bring him back another yr.

So keep doing the same stupid thing and hope it works. You do know the definition of insanity, right?

If you have one OC that has a bad offense, you have a bad OC. If you have three OC's and the offense is still bad, you have a bad HC,

As many have said, who would want to work for Jones as OC after the last 3 have been forced to swallow his scheme and regurgitate it (visual image intentional)?

And... if you have to take the one thing away from a coach that is supposedly his contribution... why keep him at all? Jones came in as a guy with an "O". He had to hire DC's to bring their scheme.... but the O was his.

His O. His way. DOES NOT WORK.

As far as team management and recruiting go... where is the roster that should have been the product of those highly ranked classes? Why can't either of UT's 4* QB's run the O? Where is that deep and supposedly talented OL?

This team is thin and young and has questionable talent... which is pretty much where Jones found it.

Basically you've made the case for keeping a useless coach.

At which point Jones realized Scott wasn't going to get it done he should have taken over as OC. Though not sure how much difference it could have made. That's his only current move he can do...leaving Scott as OC and Butch calls plays. No one coming on board a sinking ship.

Butch’s offensive coordinators are only allowed to call about a dozen plays, so no difference who is OC

It does when the time of possession is in favor of the opponent by more than half if not double. When the opponents offensive strength is what the teams primary weakness is, it's destined to catch up with the team at one point in the game or the other.

The only way to effectively neutralize that is to play ball control offense or at least take advantage of the possessions and score points. When the offense runs a handful of plays at most, while trying to disguise it by multiple formations and sets, but still running the same plays...most D1 coordinators will have an answer for that by the 3rd quarter.

Thus equaling in stalled drives, turnovers and eventually the defense tiring out due to being on the field double the amount of time because the offense is inept.

Butch does not want to be here. This matters tremendously.

He'd leave for a MAC job, if UT refused to fire him. The man is miserable.
