About 6.5 hours southeast of Knoxville, in a little town called Myrtle Beach, there’s a youth flag football team sporting Pantone 151. Every Friday night these boys go to battle against the likes of South Carolina, Florida, Texas, Virginia Tech….to name a few. These little fellas have compiled a record of 22-3 over three seasons, and back to back championships for Coach, VolAllen.

The boys were down 20-7 in the second half of the championship game Friday night with nearly 1,000 fans in attendance, but stormed back in dramatic fashion to win 21-20 in overtime. It wrapped up a perfect 8-0 season, beating Newberry, South Carolina, Maryland, Michigan State, Texas, Virginia Tech, Florida, Michigan State (playoffs), and Newberry (championship).

It may seem insignificant, but these boys have become VFL’s without ever stepping foot in Knoxville. Who knows, maybe someday we’ll watch them run through the T.

I’ll attach a link to a highlight video. Enjoy! 🏆🍊

Nice story and congrats to the boys but how can you be down 20-7 at half time and win 21-20 in overtime?

So the score was 20-20 at end of game, how do you score 1 point in OT? Not trying to be a jerk just don’t understand.

Great question! So in our league, you take turns going for 1 from the 5 yard line in when in OT. So when you score in regulation, you have the option to go for 1 from the 5, 2 from the 15, and 3 from the 50.

So we tied it up 20-20, won the coin toss and I took defense first. We stopped their attempt, then hit ours for the win.

Little side note, when going for 1 it has to be a pass, as you’re in the “no run zone”. If you decide to back up and go for 2, it can be a run or pass.

Congrats, what a memory! My twin 11year old grandsons play flag football. At that age, I think it's so much better than tackle football.

Great job, Coach.
I'm impressed by the whole setup.

Great story! Would be awesome if somebody could get this to the appropriate party(s) with the university that could treat these youngsters to a game this fall. They would definitely be fans for life.
My son Felix (#8) has been to quite a few games, but yeah I’d love to take his friends with us to one.

I hope you mean 3 from the 20, 1 play from the 50 would be nuts. Looks like these kids are having a blast and learning invaluable lessons in the process. I'm happy to see a youth league that keeps score and crowns a champion.

Ha! Nope! You can attempt 1 play from midfield for 3 points. And honestly….there were a few teams that we could have pulled it off on.

Outstanding!!!
I’m in Upstate SC and was in MB a few weeks back. Never knew this was a thing, let alone to the degree of involvement that it obviously is.
If, by God’s grace, I’m here this time next spring, I will definitely be looking to come to a game. Congratulations to you and the players and families for being a bright spot. Go Vols!!!

It’s so much fun for the kids and parents! We’ll have a few weeks off and then start practicing again for the Fall season. We’re moving up a division and bringing our main 6 guys with us, the other 3 players will stay behind for a couple more seasons. My main 6 will be going on their 4th season together, which is pretty wild to be so young.

I used to coach elementary basketball. It was a 5th grade league, but my school was so small we were allowed to have 4th and 5th players.
It was a lot of teaching dribbling, passing, and using the backboard for layups. I had to start from scratch because most of my players had never really played basketball before. Apparently that is not part of PE curriculum anymore.
I had one good group my final 2 years. I only had 2 winning seasons and they were both with this group of young men. They lost in the league championship game both seasons. They were the only group I did not have to teach how to play and we could scheme.

Same when I coached baseball at my school (community K-8 school). It was a spring league and we started the first week of January. It took a few practices before all players could throw and catch well enough not to get a broken nose or cheekbone. It was a 6th-8th grade league. Most of my team was 4th and 5th graders. I only had 1 player that played travel ball and he was crippled by anxiety. He would have fit in with the Cleveland Indians in the Major League movies. Total Bad News Bears situations.

I injured my right elbow during the first practice I ever coached, trying to teach the young man who could throw accurately how to pitch. I coached two seasons before I had tennis elbow repair surgery and ulnar nerve surgery.
No more baseball for me.

I did not win a lot of games, but I hope I instilled some love for the games with those kids.

That's so cool. You've got a couple of ringers on your team, one being your boy. I'm in Mt. Pleasant...one day next season I might make the two hour drive to check it out.
