I, like thousands of others, was around Gus for a few years as a student athlete back in the day.
Great guy, a real personality and a true Vol icon...RIP

In another small world saga, at the Garth Brooks concert a few years back, with the wife dealing with a recent knee replacement, an usher guided us to some of those seats behind the doors off the main concourse with the explanation that those were Gus's normal seats, but he must not be coming. But he did after the start of the show. He turned down my offer to vacate and simply took a single seat in the same box. Oddly enough the article showed he was 3 days younger than my Dad, who I lost 15 years ago.

Only met him once back in the 60's just before a BB game while my Dad was in conversation with Ken Rice in the Isle of the old Orange Tie Section as he rolled down toward the court in some official capacity I bet.

He did have several conversations with the wife back in the day (80's) when she was annually calling to order those old mags by the department for me. Still answering the phones... go figure.

Gus was around when I came to Tennessee 1956. He was part of the glue which made our University the leader it became. The University and all,of us will miss him. RIP

They were the sports information directors at Tennessee when I moved to Knoxville in 1969 from Macon.
