In the southeasternmost county of Georgia - Camden (powerhouse HS football team) - often as not, the seasons are about biting insects as the weather. In the marshlands, noseeums (biting midges) are a fact of life. Skeeters show up before winter is over on the calendars. Year by year, the smaller black'n'white horseflies and the yellow deerflies take turns appearing to bedevil you. They're fast, hard to swat, and their bites sting. Always last to appear any given year are the large horseflies. Dadgum things will take a divot out of you. You'll swear you can see your own blood pooling where they bit you.
