WIth the not-so-sudden departure of Janzen Jackson, we are now left with only two 5* players.

Da'Rick Rogers
Brent Vinson

Sorry, forgot. Vinsen got kicked off.

We're left with Da'Rick and
Ben Martin.

I happen to be a registered stargazer, and this hurts me as a card carrying member. However, excited for the players who don't puss out.

it would be interesting for someone to do some reserach and see how many 5 stars we should have... BB and Jackson, but are there any more?

Our five stars over the years

2002: James Banks, Mondre Dickerson, Brandon Jeffries, JT Mapu, Gerald Riggs Jr.
2003: Robert Meachem
2004: Jesse Mahelona, Albert Toeaina
2005: Demetrice Morley
2006: Walter Fisher
2007: Eric Berry, Chris Donald, Ben Martin, Kenny O'Neal, Brent Vinson
2008: None
2009: Bryce Brown, Janzen Jackson
2010: Da'Rick Rogers

Depressing list.

Only players that contributed like a 5 star on that list are Berry, Rogers (well, he probably will), Meachem, Janzen and maybe Mahelona.

actually

James Banks, Gerald Riggs Jr., Robert Meachem
Jesse Mahelona, Albert Toeaina, Demetrice Morley, Eric Berry, Ben Martin, Janzen Jackson

All these guys contributed at some point. Still a sad list but if you are gonna call folks out at least tell it like it is.

Banks went to Carson-Newman and wasn't even a star there. Riggs was a disappointment from Day one.

Mapu came in looking like he was going to be a stud, but he wasn't the same player when he returned from his mission trip.

Key phrase: "like a five star"

Banks was only here for two years and wasn't really impressive. Riggs was decent, but wasn't elite at all.
Morley is a headcase, but I will admit that he was pretty talented (not nearly as good as Janzen though). Martin has a chance to turn things around, and I think he will. His career has been disappointing to say the least, although not any fault of his own.

IMO This thread would be a great title for a movie. This would be a goldmine title for a movie about Indians and war. Maybe we could get Daniel Day-Lewis to play a character named Hawkeye in it.

Im just saying

Thoughts?

How did we get so many in 07? Really worked out for us didn't it

I seem to remember, when James Banks thought of us enough to grace us with his presence on the field, he was pretty good. The Hail Mary at Florida in 03 and shoot, he won the Bama game for us in Overtime, caught 3 TD's if I remember correctly (or 2 TD's and a 2 pt. conversion?) Still a disappointment considering what he could have become had he decided to play football instead of jamming to loud music in his car smoking... Shame.

Does that list not say something about stargazing? I'll go with CDD's evaluations and let the services play their game

I suppose Da'Rick and Ben Martin are the only ones remaining. Why are so many 5 stars such a bust? Reminds me of shooting stars--they shine brilliantly for a few games and flame out for many reasons. Is it the diva syndrome? Is it their talent carried them through HS, but they aren't committed to work harder in college? If they are great players they leave after their JR year. Have they been mismanaged? Are they great athletes, but can't pass basket weaving? Have they just been overrated?

I would love for DD to bring is loads of 5 stars who meet his overall criteria and we will see if his staff can coach them up into great players who stay at least through their Jr. year and contribute. Until he can get to that point, bring in solid 3 and 4 stars, coach them up and win enough to attract the elites. Most of the time a motivated, smart good player who puts forth effort will beat an elite who doesn't.

Remember the tortoise and hare story. We just need more smart and motivated hares.

Most of the guys on that list were pretty good. Banks, Morley and Vinson were all great players who just couldn't get their acts together. The evaluations weren't really wrong, they were very talented, there were just off the field issues, which obviously recruiting services don't evaluate.

I think this is also part of his original point which many on here have a hard time comprehending.

It's a safer bet to have a 3 star commit with impeccable character who will more than likely invest himself int he program for 4 years then a 5 star with questionable work ethic or character issues, yet many insist on the 5 star just because, well he's a "5-star".

Let the coaches evaluate and quit focusing on stupid stars.
