The last decade of Tennessee football has revealed the caliber of coach that Phillip Fulmer truly is. CPF has never been a great coach; I never believed that even in his run during the 90s. His success was more a product of the relative weakness of the rest of the conference. Only one other SEC school had comparable talent during that time, and consequently we lost to that team most of the time. I did, however, think he was a good coach, but the last few years have shown him to be a very average coach at best. I think one of the most accurate measures of a coach is what he can do when he has the same or less talent than the opposition. CPF has shown that he is not going to consistently "outcoach" anyone (excluding his recent success against UGA). When I finally came to this realization (probably later than I should have) it allowed me to adjust my expectations accordingly.

You are probably correct. But why bash CPF in his final year as coach? Let's celebrate the good times and allow him to go out gracefully. All of the Fulmer bashing is irelevant at this point. He is done at TN. No way he can get it back at this point.

All I'm saying is that the case is already made based on the performance on the field this year. This is definitely that last go around for the great pumpkin. He will go down in TN history as a legend.

Sherman, I hope you are correct, although I could see UT miraculously finishing 7-5 and CPF being retained for yet another go-round. I know 7-5 does not seem likely at this point, but it is possible. IMO it's 70/30 that he will be replaced. . . it's the 30 that terrifies me.

Tn will probably lose to Bama and then to SC on the road. The rest of the games are toss ups except for Wyoming. No way TN finishes better than 6-6. IMO that will result in a change.

This whole Fulmer thing has me frusturated. I want to be able to get into the football team, but I'm over it. It is the cumulative effect of the past 5 or 6 years. It reminds me of trying to follow the basketball Vols through the Buzzball period. I'm just more than ready to move on to someone new who can hopefully provide more excitement and a better product on the field.

I'm actually enjoying the "new coach" talk and anticipating the change. That is making this season enjoyable for me. I still love watching the games, even though it's really frustrating.

Notice how once the SEC got better the UT program got worse? yeah, dat's no coincidence.

Glad it's working for you. I still watch when I can and keep up with it. It's just not the same. :hi:

Loyaly has kept CPF alive this long, and it is an admirable quality (perhaps the most admirable). Let me pose a question. If we were guaranteed 2 SEC titles over the next decade with CPF or 3 by hiring a coach outside the TN family, what would you choose?

Given that choice I would stick with Fulmer. Those old enough to remember, know how much CPF has done for Tn. I remember the misery of Bill Battle.

imo, loyalty is very important, yes you probably could buy or hope to buy a title like bama is trying to do but what is important, loyalty and character or trash like saban that jumps for a dollar like a stripper.
In this argument I'll go with loyalty and be thankful for the 2 titles with a coach like cpf.As it has been said 2 in 10 yrs is pretty good.
And 3 is more than 2 but at what cost?
