the jumbotron

I sit in X-5 in the 48th row and the screen is impressive....WHEN THE WHOLE THING IS USED TO SHOW FOOTBALL...

Maybe it is a trial run but I was really expecting to see that thing full screen with a scoreboard type thing on one side....I figured they would do advertisements and little short "commercials' during t.v. timeouts..Kinda like they do at NFL stadiums..

Maybe this will change but for now it is a HUGE letdown.

Can someone take this topic up with Hammie, he is likely to reply.

just imagine how much our 'donations' would have to go up if the ads weren't there.

They had a score bar along the bottom during pre-game warm ups (It had Tennessee & WKU's logo & everything) but they turned it off shortly before game time (It was where that black bar along the bottom of the screen was the whole game). I guess they were having issues getting it to work properly.

The program that controlled that was locking up constantly. Rather than risk the whole tron going on the fritz mid-game, they just punted on the scorebar, problem should be solved by next week.

Also, putting the time and score on the main tron will allow UT to return to last year's custom of having an constant out-of-town scroll on the ribbon board on the south end, where the time and score was this week.

2. The video and sound were at least 2 seconds out of sync and that bugged the livin' crap out of me.

That, unfortunately, is a problem that isn't going to be solved. The video and sound are synced perfectly, actually. The problem is, in a stadium that size, the sound from the speakers on the main press box reaches your section at a different time. It's most noticable in the endzones. They've tested in the past putting speakers in other places in the stadium, but that ends up being a cluster**** of echos and does exactly zero to address the problems in the endzones. I've noticed this problem at other stadiums as well.

That is good news regarding the national scores being kept updated. I was pleased with the new board and I knew the ads would be large....that is part of it. It just isn't logical to expect it to be full screen replays/video (ad-free) for 90% of the game.

Sitting in S row 48, I didn't notice any lag. I am sitting in Y6 for UCLA though, so we will see. I haven't noticed it in years past though (mostly spent in the north endzone).

I didn't really notice that sitting in YY8.

Looked good though. I just wish that during the replays it would be full screen all the time. When not being used for that, show all the ads you want.

I hated that they stretched the screen. If you're going to have a widescreen panel, then shoot in widescreen mode. It looked terrible when everyone was stubby...

They are shooting in widescreen, but are doing it in the standard 16:9 widescreen. The tron is wider than that.

My sister-in-law is an ex-UT cheerleder and was commenting how she felt bad for the girls being stretched like that. :lolabove:

Hahaha. It was funny, but if you're gonna put that much money into a screen like this, having a camera that shoots in the same dimensions is an absolute MUST.

Cameras don't shoot in that dimension. The board is designed to have ads or other images framing the pictures.

the jumbotron was nice when they actually used the whole screen to show a replay. how pathetic, they spent that much money to show the sponsors better.

i hate the jumbotron.

I was somewhat disappointed too. After the 1000's of threads I expected gold, silver, diamonds or something. All I got was a screen that seemed smaller to me.

entirely not true. look at the ravens and eagles screens. those are well beyond a 16:9 ratio and their images are not stretched out like that.

No, they cut the top and bottoms of the images. There was quite a bit of research done by UT on how others handle images on boards of similar dimensions to ours.

The overwhelming recommendation was to do as the Ga Dome does and to keep ads or images solid on the ends to maintain the video at 16:9. Hamilton said he wanted to be able to say that at big times in the game, he wanted video on the whole thing, so we have what we have.

If you don't like it, complain to him, that's the only way its going to change. mhamilton@utk.edu

the point i was trying to make was you can film and display at whatever angle or ratio your camera or lens allows. i don't have any knowledge of the tv cameras used there, but i would doubt they actually have those on field or at a wide enough angle for the jumbo. obviously they would be optimized for the tv audience, which wouldn't require anything more than a 16:10 or 16:9.

I agree...that was really bothering me. I wonder if they are going to do anything to correct this issue? Would they have to have 2 cameras....one to shoot in Widescreen and one to shoot Normal?

This is correct. The black bars on your DVD's are when video is shot at 2.35:1. Ben Hur was shot at 2.76 :1. They could pillarbox the shot or shoot in a more suitable aspect ratio.

Thanks for the info man! :salute: I feel better about the board now! :good!:

I think it is awesome. If we are going to copy other stadiums, how about a flaming mouth coming out of a giant smoky like the Hockey games in ATL?
