The JUCO thing

Seems like Dooley's last class and Fulmer's towards the end had more jukos than usual, and we know what happened after that. I hate seeing CBJ get desperate and mortgage the future by turning away good high school talent for a quick fix.

If this doesn't work out its just going to be that much harder for the next coach.

The next coach would just have fewer transfers to arrange. If they can get an Owen William, Alvin Kamara, or Von Pearson, great. If they pull in busts, it will be a mess, but less time consuming to fix.

Kamara and Owen Williams are Scrubs. You're right.

Chuck Smith, Chris Mims, Dale Carter, Charlie Garner, et.al were all terrible.

Juco's are the worst nightmare.

Losers.

The point is not that JUCO players are in and of themselves bad players that can't contribute and even be star players at Tennessee......as you pointed out we have some all-time great Vols that came from the JUCO ranks.

The point is that THIS STAFF has failed miserably nearly across the board with the JUCO players they've brought in.

Kamara is a great, incredibly talented player who they completely mismanaged and misused during his time here. Pearson was ok, as was Owen Williams....both contributed decently enough but weren't great players....aaannnndddddd that's been pretty much it. The other 7 or 8 players or so they've brought have either been busts or have thoroughly underwhelmed by not contributing a whole lot.

Juco players can help, but with Butch on the hot seat for sure next
year, he will need guys that are ready for immediate play. No time to sit a year and develop in weight room. Who are the stud Juco players that Butch is after and what is their opinion of UT? Doesn't make sense to lose a 4* high school player if you don't have another player "in hand".

Exactly!

When you tell a 4 star recruit we need to get JUCOs, IMO it's a sign of desperation.

It's not the ideal situation for sure. I hate turning away an athlete like Cottman. Actually, I don't even know where I stand in that right now to be honest. But, anyone who watched our defense lately can't deny that we need immediate help at DB to compete and it doesn't appear that help will arrive with the current roster or by any incoming freshman.

In other words, JUCO DBs may be the only solution when it comes to upgrading our current D backfield...especially when you factor in the loss of our best DB in Cam. If you want a shot at winning more than 8 games next year then that position needs a quick improvement.

FWIW - I have no idea where these JUCO DBs we're even after are coming from

Going after JUCO guys is by no means "a sign of desperation" and it shouldn't "raise a red flag" either, because there are LOADS of hidden gems at that level.

Most of them are simply there because they didnt qualify academically but are oozing with talent, some are there because of character flaws (and those typically quit or get kicked off before even getting out of JUCO), and then there are the guys that go there because they need a second chance to improve in certain areas before they can garner serious attention from D1 schools (I needed a little more time to develop physically and fill out my frame, so I chose the JUCO route out of high school instead of going D1- AA or D2... every kid dreams to play in the SEC right?)

What they are looking for, and quite honestly they expect it, is a guy that has all the skills, size, and maturity to come in and be ready to play from day 1 and doesn't need to have his hand held leaving home for the first time like Freshman do.

No, Tennessee hasn't had the best of luck when going that route, but I would be willing to bet they go after/sign less JUCO guys than just about anybody else in the nation. Not sure for their reasoning, but it's always been that way.
