The iPhone is coming to Verizon

So Gizmodo thinkgs that if Apple launches a Verizon iPhone it's not likely to have 4G. And by the sound of it, it's probably not worth getting a new 4G phone anyway as the service will really suck. So if it comes down to just a CDMA Droid vs. CDMA iPhone, I think I would rather have the Droid instead.

Based on the info that has come out in the last 48 hours, my current plan is to just wait until the fall of 2011 (if possible) before I get a new phone. My BB is still holding strong and my only gripe has been recent battery life going down.

Things should probably be clearer by then. Because the last thing I would want to do is jump on the newest of something, before all the problems and kinks have been realized. The 4G service probably scares me the most in that regard.

I think it's really a disservice to consumers if Verizon releases an iPhone that isn't LTE (4G) compatible. Then again, Apple can sit around for another year and then release the new iPhone featuring....wait for it....LTE!

Verizon announced today that they will release a list of devices in January that will be 4G compatible. They will have 4G in some markets, mostly around major airports, before 2011 but no devices.

Do you have a link to an article about that?

When will the first 4G devices for Verizon become available? I know the speculation now is that the Verizon iPhone will not initially come with 4G

Current devices?

No device that VZ currently offers will work on their 4G network. You will have to purchase a new device to use that network. Their first device out next year on the LTE network will probably be a usb connection card.

I have an iPhone with AT&T. No problem with dropped calls or anything. But in comparison to verizon's droid, the droid gets 3g service in the same area where I can't with the iPhone. Therefore, downloads are faster with the droid. Not only that, but you damn near have to pay for everything with the iPhone. Apps cost, songs cost, etc. The droid has better and more free apps IMO. Don't get me wrong, I love the iPhone, I just think there's more available to droid users. I know to purchase songs, it costs .99-1.29 per song when the droid has an app that you can search and listen to any song in it's entirety, and that app is free.

I know my uncle has a droid and he downloaded a free app that allows him to search and play any song known to man. iPhone does have free apps and games, I just think the droids free apps are better. I live in a rural area and don't have 3g service; he lives in the same area and has 3g service with verizon. So everything downloads faster for him. Not sure what his data plan rates are though. I've got unlimited on mine but don't remember how much it is. Back to the speed thing though, I downloaded the govolsxtra app before it was a paid app. He did, too. Slow as all get out on mine; not so much for him. It's faster for me to get on govolsxtra online using my phone than it is to use the app.

Well I live in an area that Verizon will be launching 4G, so I might try and wait until the spring and get a 4G phone.

That is what jailbreaking is for. It is legal. There's plenty of stuff free for the iPhone even without jailbreaking though. The grass isn't always greener. There are advantages and disadvantages to both sides of this. A lot of people also don't realize that there are Android devices on every major carrier. Comparing iPhones to the "Droid" variants on Verizon is just comparing the AT&T network to Verizon's at this point.

Looks like there might not be a 4G iphone out until 2012. See below...

"First things first — the iPhone CDMA model due in January won’t support LTE. But here’s where it gets really interesting:
sources tell me that the iPhone refresh in mid-2011 won’t support LTE either. Instead, Apple will produce a dual mode
iPhone containing 3G flavors of GSM and CDMA, which operates on all carriers worldwide. If this holds true, Apple won’t
support the LTE standard until some time in 2012. A lot of you aren’t going to be very happy with this news, since 4Genabled
Android phones already exist on Sprint’s WiMAX network, and dual-mode LTE-enabled Android phones will start
to emerge for use on Verizon’s new network in the first half of next year."
