I'd like to take a minute to express my feelings on the individuals in east TN who claim to be fans of Tennessee rivals...just because.
You are all a bunch of losers!
I worked at Lids for a short period during college, and whenever someone wanted to buy a Florida, Georgia, or Alabama hat, I'd ask if they were from that area. Almost 100% of the time, I'd get some sort of a response resembling, "I just hate Tennessee." Then, I'd always ask if they could name three players from the team they were "supporting". As you'd guess, I rarely got a right answer.
Last Friday, I approached two young ladies wearing Alabama shirts. Neither could even name Alabama's coach...but what they did know, was that they hated Tennessee. I was at a wedding reception for the majority of the second half on Saturday night, and this is where I heard my favorite "rival fan" comment ever. A woman walked by the big group of folks obviously pulling for the Vols, and she said, (in a super redneck voice) "I'm goin for the red team."
These are the people who obviously don't care about football very much, but they have so little personality, that they have to try and get attention by going against the grain. To those people, I say GET A LIFE. If you actually care about football, and you don't like Tennessee, that's fine. Just know what you are talking about if you are going to try and get attention by being "different." Otherwise, you make yourself and "your team" look stupid. Also, you are pushing me closer and closer to taking a hostage!

Good post panthro. There are lots of fans of Gators and the Tide and they dont even know the QB for their team. They do it to get attention and these people need to walk off a cliff.

Only one hostage? Take two and do it right. Cryer and Satan.

Yeah it is even more annoying to see rival SEC schools stuff being worn around campus. I always want to ask them why they didn't just go there.

It's not just in East Tennesse, but in Middle Tennessee it is just as bad. I've lived in both Middle And East TN and of all of the people I have met, a staggering number of people go for Alabama and Florida. Just wait and see how many of those people come over to the Lane Train in a couple of years. I say three cheers for all the "real" UT fans!!!!

I've always chalked it up to bandwagon fans. The best example I've seen has been a truck I saw in the mid 90s had a both a Kentucky sticker and an Alabama sticker in their window. Now I always give somewhat a benefit of the doubt that possibly their wife/husband is a fan of the other team, because I've seen that quite a lot.

But dude that got out was single. I had to ask him about it, even though I knew the answer....Alabama for football, Kentucky for basketball. Which made him a double-douche.

I love being a fan of a widely "hated" team. I've been a UT fan my whole life, and will be till' the day I die. The best thing about being "hated" is you know you're a threat.

My response is usually "Oh, well they'll take your money regardless of how much you really like 'em. Go buy another shirt."

I have run into several of these "Tide fans" as well in East Tennessee. They usually know nothing about football and were near extinction three years ago. Hopefully they will be again soon.

i know a few real tide fans in the area, but for everyone there are 3 of the ones you speak of. i dont really have a name for them. it is what it is. i hate Virginia tech as much as any team in college football, but im not going to buy uva shirt, or unc. if you really hate UT just dont pay any attention unless they are playing your team.

If it's a Florida fan, I'll usually ask them to name one player on defense...because even my dog knows who Tim Tebow is.

I can't believe that ANY of these "fans" are from Tennessee originally. I live in Florida but was born and raised in Tennessee, therefore I'm always a Vol. I bet these people have moved to Tennessee from other states.

There are a lot of frontrunners in the world of fandom. My cousin is the worst I have ever seen. A few years ago, we were at Christmas dinner and something came up about him hating Tennessee. So, I asked him who he liked and he said..."Alabama in football, Kentucky in basketball, the Yankees in baseball, the Celtics in pro basketball, and the Cowboys in pro football." I just laughed and asked him what he did when a UT player went to play for the Cowboys. He said that then, he would like that player.

A few weeks ago he came down to my parents house to work on their AC unit. I was there and had the Tennessee game on. He looked around and said something about being a Florida fan! I asked him what happened to his being an Alabama fan and he said that he started liking Florida when Emmit Smith was there. This was total BS because Smith was at UF before we had the discussion about his favorite teams at the Christmas dinner.

People...I swear.

Bingo!
They are transplants. Tennessee is a much wealthier state that alabama so a lot of that human garbage comes north looking for work, sort of like the illegals from Ole Mexico. Some find good jobs at factories and such and stay. They end up carrying their "pride" from their home state with them in their new homeland. Sorta like the Mexican illegals fly the Mexican flag over the Stars and Stripes.

They are not Tennesseans.

Also, There are VOL fans in bama, Jawja and Florida. I work with a Tennessee fan down here, he is from South Florida but his family originally came from Tennessee.

I knew a guy that would buy shirts/jackets each year of the teams that won the college NC and Super Bowl. Made him feel "special". I think he rode the short bus but never asked him.

i go to mjhs in Mount Juliet, close to nasvhille and a lot of people are florida and bama fans, mostly girls but still a lot of guys and i ask the same thing most of them know tebow and meyer and stuff but thats about it and the bama fans only know saban.. my ex girlfriend is a florida fan and when i found this out i asked her to name everybody she knew on the team(this was last season) and she said tebow, harvin, demps, rainy, dunlap, and spikes.. i was fairly impressed but her family is from florida so that shows there are some true fans but mostly of them are bandwaggons but dont worry my friends.. in a few years time all these people will be jumping on OUR bandwaggon!

Girl that works for me bought an Alabama shirt when we were working there a couple of weeks ago (keep in mind she's from Austin). I told her she was fired unless she replaced it with a Tennessee shirt.
