The hype around Bray eerily resembles...

Actually there was little to no hype about Ainge going into 05 he had spent his whole freshmen year splitting time with that Willie Beamen wanna be and actually there was a bit of a quarterback controversy in Fall camp because Rick Clausen had been last seen being named the Cotton Bowl MVP for throttling Texas A&M. The hype in '05 was about the team as a whole Ainge was supposed to just hand off to Riggs and let the defense go to work.

I call bull on that. You had PLENTY of people out here running around comparing his freshman numbers to Peyton's and were already crowning him the next great TN QB.

The hype after Ainge's freshman year. We went into 05 believing we had our "franchise qb" and we all know what happend. I think the difference will have to prove to be our O-line. We had a great D that year and everyone still knows what happend. This year our D is not so good. Just thought it was an interesting parallel.

Your analysis is spot off. Unless Bray's taking a bottle of pain pills and washing it down with Jack, then I don't think his sophomore year or career is going to be anything like Ainge's.

I have heard this said several times. Bray and Ainge are totally diffrent situations, diffrent team, coaches, and quarterbacks. Coaching staff and team are not complacent. They are hungry.

Well I wasn't on this board 6 years ago. But you def were not seeing anybody in the national media hyping up Ainge. I still have the Athlon from that year where UT was #3 pre-season in its summary it said the only question mark about the team was QB and that "The Vol's have no apparent weakness otherwise"

Over half the people predicting 3500+yards and 32+ TDs.

Very generous considering a young OL, unproven receivers and no telling how our run game is going to turn out. A one dimensional passing team with youth at WR and QB isn't going to set the world on fire.
Over half the people?
6 predictions out of twenty in that thread were 3500+ and only one of those also predicted 32 TDs. IMO popped collar is affecting reading ability, JMO.

Yeah, all of this unsettled business at quarterback with Dooley talking about alternating between Bray and Simms is just like the hype leading up to '05.

I have tried to blot out as much as possible about the '05 debacle from my memory as well, but there were significant questions at QB going into '05. Ainge got hurt halfway through the Notre Dame game in '04. Clausen then looked decent closing out the season (with the exception of the ND game), and finished out against TAMU with a great game. A starter wasn't named going into the '05 season, and Ainge and Clausen split time to start.

I do agree that there were a lot of fans that believed Ainge was the man for the next few years, and there were a lot of comparisons drawn between him and Manning at the time. I think it is similar that there are a lot of fans who seem to believe unquestioningly that Bray is bound for success, but I would say the two actual situations are far apart.

Bray is a completely different QB than Ainge, however...He may be like Ainge and not be clutch. I hope I'm wrong.

Ainge was a good player for us during his time, but he did have a horrible slump in that second season. I hope Bray can come out and prove that he is a solid QB with championship potential. I wonder if we're not throwing too much on him right away. Of course, this is Tennessee and the expectations are always high. Go Vols!

Their two freshman seasons may draw some similarities, but we're comparing apples to oranges.

Different players, different skill sets, different personalities, different team, different coaching staffs, different SEC environment, different culture at UT.

Most rookie QB's in the NFL have terrible first seasons, but that doesn't mean they're all destined to have terrible careers.

I'm taking the comparison at face value.

He may have some weak aspects (though none are apparent so far) but not being 'clutch' isn't one of them.

The kid is Moxie personified.

Since when did we "franchise" college QBs? And It sounds like Bray has had a few more 1 night stands with some Frat boys girlfriends and then sent them back home by the looks of this thread. LMFAO!
