... listening to the Colin Cowherd show on my flight today, and plugged in right as he is discussing the Al Davis press conference. The only thing he said about Kiffin was...

"Lane Kiffin. 2009 Tennessee football head coach. I love starting rumors."

National radio, ESPN audience. How long before this is the overkill story of the week/month?

O/U - 2 losses (3 weeks)

It already hasn't been? Still not convinced that he's the man for the UT program. Not only that, why is his name being thrown around so much? There are better coaches out there with proven records. The act that ESPN loves him doesn't mean anything except he went to the Tijuana donkey show with their execs. :naughty:

Already is, sad thing about it is that it might be true. Oh, and remember that 10 year stretch where Bama was awful? Yeah, that could be us if we aren't careful with how this plays out.

I haven't seen enough of the Radiers to have much of an opinion about Kiffin, but I can see the upside in hiring a guy who was the offensive coordinator at USC. With a reputation as an outstanding recruiter, which we desperately need. Who managed being the head guy well enough to turn a completely abysmal NFL team into a merely bad, occasionally competitive one. From everything I've read, he didn't lose the Oakland job because he couldn't handle it; he lost it because he couldn't get along with Al Davis. I fail to see how that counts against him.

how hard could it be to recruit CA into LA...

we need to be careful to not jump the gun so quickly. im losing my love for CPF, but i'd hate to do anything that makes it worse.

three things that the new head coach needs to do:

1 speed speed speed
2 dominate the big three (UF, UGA, UA)
3 take back neyland

oh wait, dang you urban meyer.

two things though: we already recruit from CA quite often

...and i really think last year's unbeaten at home counted as our take back neyland...

Too bad Florida and Bama were not at home. The only impressive home win was Georgia... Arkansas was actually out coached by Fulmer (and that's sad) and Jones got hurt on the opening kickoff or close to it.

Whoever and whenever the next UT coach is hired, he is not likely to be somebody who has already won multiple championships in a BCS conference and who has a proven track record of recruiting nationally. Guys like that aren't going to leave their current situations to start over in Knoxville. We're going to have to project at some level: hiring a coordinator and giving him a shot as a head coach, maybe, or taking a guy from a smaller conference and giving him a shot in the big leagues. If you're going to quibble about Kiffin's reputation as a recruiter because he was in LA, then you're probably not going to be happy with anybody's resume unless we hire Carroll or Saban or Meyer.

I have no idea wither Kiffin would be a good hire, or whether he'd even be interested, or (of course) whether the job will be open. But I've seen no reason to dismiss him out of hand.

i hear you. i didnt mean to hurt his feelings, what with Al Davis going all schoolyard on him already. but surely IF CPF is ever ousted from his nice, fat, oak and leather chair in Knoxville, i hope fans are ready for a couple, maybe more, difficult years of UT football.

oh wait, dang you 1999-2008.

No doubt. But if you hire Ron Zook the first time, you just fire him, move on to the next guy, and maybe you get Urban Meyer the next time. If he doesn't work out, the next guy will be 1/100th as hard to get rid of as Fulmer. The alternative is to do nothing and watch the last six years play on repeat until Fulmer turns 80 and gets tired of cashing his paycheck.

PREACH ON.

but any way we spin it, we're screwed. zook wasnt a particularly pleasant time for the gayterds.

dude. i just figured it all out for us!

maybe we could hire travis henry instead. i like his entrepenurial spirit. he certainly knows how to manage a lot of people, what with 9 wives and 9 kids. add 4 more people and there's a whole offense and defense for you. he's got NFL experience, and with so many fumbles to his credit, perhaps he can teach AF what NOT to do at the goal line.

vote henry '08

see, anyone can do Hamilton's job.

The last rumor I heard that was started involved Peter Griffin and his friends telling about how Rob Schneider pays migrant workers from Home Depot to choke him in the shower.

I don't know having a coach that ESPN loves has its advantages year after year.....Pete Carol.....

Regardless of who is mentioned for the UT job, the fact that we are hearing more opinions on a job opening from the national media is a step. Not very long ago, I believe the same network was telling UT fans to simmer down about Fulmer. How quickly things seem to change.

I saw that game the same way you did. Peyton Hillis carrying the ball on 3rd and short while McFadden was on the sideline made no sense at all, and they did that a few times from what I recall.

if they're looking for an OC from another school, why wouldn't they just promote Clawson? They need a coach with name recognition. Someone who could go in a recruits home and they say, wow, can't believe this guy is in my living room. Fulmer gets, wow, that guy eats alot.

I'am not ready to warm up to the idea of lane kiffin. I think we need someone who has been there and done that. Important hire to make. Don't hire a name, hire a winner.

Was Fulmer a big name when we hired him? To say that Kiffin is not a winner is a stretch. He did not win at a crappy Raider team. He only manged to be the O/C of a USC team that was either BCS Champs or close to being champs in 5 of 6 years.
