Why does Boston have the green monster? Do they not hurt their chances of hitting a homerun? If it was a normal size they would have more HRs.

Well actually, their park isn't too bad for homeruns because the fence in right is about 6 inches high. Perfect for those like Ortiz.

It's probably not more than about 310 ft out to that wall. If not for the Green Monster, Fenway would be a complete joke.

Yeah, it's not that far out and right field is very easy to hit a home run for someone like Ortiz.

At least it isn't like Pac Bell where the field of my middle school team was longer to right than Pac Bell.

I just saw somewhere the right field foul pole is 302 feet away. No wonder Ortiz can hit so many to right on a 3 foot fence.

The Monster is something different, it gives the ballpark some character, while affecting the play on the field a bit, which is better than throwing out a hill in CF, or making a canyon of a park, or using a football field, in order to fit paying customers in.

I'm going to guess you've never been to the Fens, but if you get a chance, check it out. It's a great park, a true piece of baseball history, at a time when theres going to be no vintage parks left once the new Yankee Stadium opens. Sure, the seats are tight (there wasn't many 350lb heifers in 1912), but they are all filled, and the fans are the best company in the world. Enter the pre-season drawing for seats on the Monster, the Budweiser patio in RF, or for any Yankee game. Never sat on the Monster, but have experienced both the Bud Patio and several Yankee games. You can't appreciate the old dump until you've been there.

Leftfield in Houston is pretty much a joke, too. Like 250 feet to the friggin' Crawford Boxes.

that's left field. it's rumored that the 310 measurement to the monster is wrong. supposedly some people snuck in and measured it to 302. A few years ago it was listed as 315... they never moved home plate and obviously never moved the green monster but suddenly a few years ago it was changed to say 310. either way GA is right. it was done simply to make it harder to a HR than a mere 310 not for anything historic or charismatic. that just happened over time.

fenway is known as a park that gives up alot of homers to all fields. while the monster is tall, its so close to the plate that a homerun in another ball park will be a homerun at fenway unless its a line drive. if you saw jeters homerun in the first nyy/bsox series it didn't look like a homerun at all off the bat and it barely got over the monster
