My wife posed an interesting question last night. We were watching Modern Marvels: Pirate Tech (I'm a nerd, shut up,) and the commentator said, "The crime of piracy predates recorded history." She looked at me and asked, "How do they know?"
Unless there is some ancient heiroglyph from the first day of recorded history saying, "Piracy continues," I'm calling BS on the History Channel.
Not all history is "recorded" per se. Much history was passed down by word of mouth and even song. I'm making an assumption here but my guess on what they meant was that the act of piracy was recognized long before anybody sat down and wrote about it. Not a stretch really since it's just a form of robbery, only based off ships.
