Do you agree with my assesment?
Assessment of 2007 Vols FB season
Good:
SEC East champions - only team of 12 in SEC to go unbeaten at home
Won last four SEC games in a row - all with playoff type atmosphere as
any loss would have eliminated VOLS Near win in SEC championship against team (LSU), which is favored to win
NC game (11 or 12 wins)
Outback (Jan 1) Bowl champions over reasonably strong big 10 team
(despite disruptive coaching changes & player suspensions)
10 win season (10-4) - Fulmer's 9th 10 win season in 15 full seasons
1 victory over BCS team with 11 wins (Georgia 11-2). Our win kept them
out of SEC championship game and possibly out of NC game(if the would
have beaten LSU),
and it was a butt whippin' (35-14), clearly biggest win of the
season 1 victory over BCS team with 9 wins (Wisconsin 9-4)
3 victorories over BCS teams with 8 wins (MSU, Arkansas & Ky) - two on
the road - and two bowl winners 1 other victory over ranked BCS team at the time (SC - # 15 at game
time) Beat one other bowl winner (S Miss) Extended nations longest win streak over one team (kentucky) to 23 years
Won 2 of 2 OT games now reaching excellent level of 7-1 overall in OT
games
Defense significantly improved as season progressed
Butt whipped 3 "easy" non-conference teams (S Miss, Arkansas St &
Lous-Laf)
Overcame great adversity by winiing 10 games & SEC East despite horrible
1-2 start
2nd win in a row over very good Georgia teams (3 of last 4 games against
the Dogs)
2nd win in a row over Spurrier coached team - 1st time ever for
Tennessee
Some major contributions from promising freshmen (E Berry, D Rogan, B
Vinson, G Jones, D Moore, L Creer, etc.)
Likely final ranking in or near top 10 (VOLS were # 16 prior to bowls
and five teams just above us have lost with a few games to go)
Bad:
Failed to win SEC championship game because of two big mistakes in 4th
qt by QB coupled with two missed FG attempts
Lost big to two teams with only 7 wins (Cal & Bama)
Lost to two biggest rivals (Florida/Bama) by huge scores - (100-37 in
total)
3rd straight loss to Florida, and first one in over 10 years by a large
score
4 total losses - 1 or 2 too many
Defense looked horrible early in season
Offense tended to play poorly in 2nd half of many games (like the bowl
game)
Overall stats - mediocre for 10 win season (pts, yards, 1st downs, etc)
Overall:
A good overall season with SEC East championship, Jan 1 bowl win and 10
win season With an SEC championship it would have been an outstanding year
Hopefully Fulmer will get some great new coaches and close recruiting
with a flurry to salvage a respectable recruiting class
