The Gonzaga Game...

I know you can't always judge on one game, but last years team who let Auburn score about 20 unanswered points in like 3 minutes would not have beaten Xavier on the road.

That's totally different. That team was filled with youth and inexperience. There's a reason they didn't win a road game other than UL-Lafayette until February.

that reason being that we had no semblance of a defense outside of the press. The d is marginally better this season and we do have more scoring options.

Our halfcourt defense was/still is pothetic. But we played tough on the road for times, but just not consistent enough to pull out wins. With the exception being Florida when we didn't have Lofton and the SC game where we didn't show up, every other game we were in with 10 minutes left in the 2nd half. We blew 3 consecutive games like the Vandy, OSU, and Auburn games. The Ole Miss game was a game of runs and Sanders got hot in the 2nd half, we played UK close until about the 10:00 mark when they went on about a 20 point run. I would expect the same for any team that started 2 Freshman and had 4 major contributors as Freshman and an undersized PF

Our defense is vastly improved this year. Still not where we need it to be, but top 50 D.
Our D is better, but not vastly improved. The true difference is that we no longer have Dane trying to guard anyone. Otherwise, we look eerily similar to last year's squad in the halfcourt.

You're right. Vastly was a poor word. KenPom had our defense as 54th in the country last year (it takes opponent's offensive strength AND pace into consideration) and right now in 07-08, we're 48th.

Games of meaning

WVU-72
Texas-97
Xavier-75
Temple-63

Those are what we've allowed for teams under 100 in RPI. Not to mention we've been average at best against UNC Asheville, Prairie View, WKU, and La Lafayette and UTC we allowed 70 in. We're in the back end of the SEC in defense.

Toughest SEC game is at Vanderbilt.

I'm not sold on Vanderbilt. Maybe's it just the detest of Kevin Stallings that I'm feeling, but I've yet to be moved by them. They've struggled with Bama A&M, UTM, Tennessee State, Depaul, Wake Forest, and Toledo and Valpraiso. There only significant win was against UGA Tech. Still, they're setting pretty right now, but I think they'll be in for a huge surprise once conference season starts.

Using PPG as a straight up means for ranking defenses is foolish and id... you know, dumb. You aren't taking pace or offensive SOS into account.

South Alabama is better than GT so far.

Take it from someone who's played basketball there entire life. I've watched every UT game. The Texas game was a fast paced game the featured Abrams and Augustin dominating on the perimiter. The WVU was a grind it out game that Alexander was beastly down low and they were able to knock down some outside shots. The Xavier game was back and forth all day. It wasn't terrible, but it certainly wasn't something to be proud about.

Your response has nothing to do with what I said.

Team X's games average 74 possessions, and Team X allows 70 points per game.

Team Y's games average 66 possessions, and Team Y allows 67 points per game.

Which defense is better?

I understand what you're saying, but you can just tell by the naked eye if a team has a good halfcourt defense or at least a resemblence of one. Tennessee is an aggressive team that looks good at time when they're press is on, but when it's a halfcourt game they get beat up severely. I don't need a stats book to tell me that.

GT has beaten 1 decent team in Notre Dame. They lost to NC Greensboro and Winthrop. Both teams are below average, but I'd lay money on S. Alabama SU today.

That's fine, but I just don't happen to think highly of your opinion. Our eyes have bias.

10 mins to tip off! lets go boys

lol @ those bruce pearl promos in the fish mkt and UK is just terrible now WOW!

95% of this board doesn't value your opinion? I can buy that.

BTW, show me where I said our defense was good?

You keep bringing up stats. We(most fans) don't need stats to evaluate how good our defense is. You're one of the only people I've talked to that seems content with our halfcourt d. Now I've got to go watch the game, I'll worry about the stat book later
