The Golf Thread

played lost creek this morning.

the roughs were terrible. i shot okay, but had to pitch back into the fairway a couple of times because the landscaping sucks(and i'm terrible off the tee). gonna try to play friday morning at pine lakes before work.

Lost Creek is atrocious. If you're going for cheap, basic golf, try Whittle Springs again for the first time. It's come a long way in the last couple of years under new management. It's still a very short course, but they've taken some steps to make it more of a challenge, such as growing actual rough and adding tee boxes. Best of all, the greens are actually puttable now, although still on the slow side.

Knox Muni is my preferred course of the two but their management company had done a good job getting both course looking good.

i may need to get out to Whittle before the season is over. i haven't been out there much this summer.

i've been playing Lambert Acres, Muni, and River Islands almost exclusively this summer.

I just find Knox Muni to be.... boring. Kind of like Pine Lakes. Not a lot of imagination in the design.

The best kept secret (well, it's a poorly-kept secret now, given how crowded it was the last couple of times I've played there) in the Knoxville area is Ruggles Ferry.

eh, i feel you. i go there because they were the first to give me a players card and it seems like every other time they're giving me 5 or 10 bucks off to come play. give me a free cart fee, and i'll be back.

the last two times i've been there the play has been unbelievably slow. i've picked up with others in front or behind me both times. it shouldn't take 4+ hours walking or riding to play a round. not to discriminate, but it's always older folks who still think they can walk the course and keep pace.

if it happens again, i may say something to the clubhouse manager.

That course is ALWAYS packed, it seems. And I'm with you on that - slow play is absolutely infuriating to me. Even a 30 handicapper can play a round of golf at a good pace if he/she plays ready golf. Nothing's more irritating than waiting for 10 minutes in the fairway while four guys on the green are marking and lining up putts as if they're in the U.S. freaking Open.

really, the problem is they don't let anybody start on the back 9. occasionally if i'm playing by myself i'll start there, especially if there's a wait on #1.

and it's not like there is any green there that requires you to aim any further outside the hole that a foot either way. the greens are pretty easy and lining up putts is easy. i always try to make sure i've got mine lined up by the time it's my turn.

the only course in Knoxville i hate to play is Dead Horse, affectionately name Dead Course by my buddies and me. if it's out of season, you may catch me there as rates drop. i need to get to Centennial soon.

When I'm back in Knoxville
I try and play Centennial

When I was growing up, we raced BMX where Knoxville Golf Course is now

when i was growing up, it's where i took my lessons as a teen, old man. :p

before that, i took lessons at the Par 3 course in Concord, which has also recently been redone and in good shape. not a bad way to spend 5 bucks.

yep
I resemble that remark

I was talking about hoh and his disaster in losing to LG.

How has the swing been since you started working on the setup?

i haven't been to course recently as i've been pretty busy so i can't say for sure, but i've been hitting the ball very well at the range. more than anything, the adjustment has helped my rhythm.

sometimes i get in in my head that i just need to smack the piss out of the ball instead of choosing a longer club. improving my rhythm has helped with my distance which i know, but sometimes can't force myself to believe on the course.

a silly, frustrating game this golf can be.

guy used to force me to swing to a metronome to reinforce my 1-2 cadence on the swing. I hated it, but it helped immensely.

It took me a long time to club down on shots. Only time I don't now is under pretty tight pressure, where I'll tend to quit on the 3/4 shot in hit a skank pulled hook.

That's a surefire recipe for diaster

Shot an 89 today, and playing again Sunday morning
today was perfect weather

Free beer too

struggled on the front today, but shot a 42 on the back..

Chipped in for a birdie from about 60 yards out on a par 4..

Ball hit the top third of the flag stick on it's downward arc, and dropped in

I have been in the market for a new set of "game improvement" sticks for a couple of months now. I only find time to play 5 or 6 times a year so my old blades have just become too hard to hit due too lack of course time. I got a near new set of Mizuno MX-17's, 3-PW, graphite shafts for $124 on ebay. I am pretty excited, I thought it was a good deal.

I usually have a natural bias against playing golf in long pants, much less long sleeves. Nevertheless, I am changing my strategy this year, and I am going to play all winter, wearing thermals and driving the tee into the ground with a hammer if necessary.

Consequently, next spring, I am going to be crushing drives and throwing darts at greens, and all of you hibernators will be so far behind me that you mistakenly think you are ahead.

Muha...

haha...

muhahahahahaa.....
