The Golf Thread

Golf is a gentleman's game . . . but it's really hard to stifle a grin when your opponent airmails one OB off the 1st tee.

I honestly felt sorry for the kid.

He honestly has no business being in the Championship Flight. He backdoored his way to the 1st Flight championship last year and he got bumped up.

He was a nervous wreck.

At least he only had to endure the anxiety attack for 13 holes.

True. I usually am not very chatty unless the opponent initates it.

But I tried my best to chat to try and calm him down.

My sporadic driving has been mentioned on here many times, but dude made me look like Fred Funk.

I've been on both end of that. One time I won the first 6 holes in a match play tournament and the other guy actually debated about whether he wanted to bother making the turn because if he quit he'd still have time to go home and mow his grass.

There there was a couple of years ago in a Member/Guest where at the end of 5 holes we were 5 down, I had managed to crack the shaft on my Driver while it was in my golf bag and my partner stood in the fairway on the 6th hole and watched a guy in the group ahead of us skull a bunker shot over the green and into the hood of his car.

Playing with some buddies Sun afternoon. A game I've never played before. We get to pick any three clubs in our bag to play with but only those clubs the entire round. One catch is that if you choose a driver, 3 wood, or 5 wood you tee it up from the back. If the longest club in your bag is a 5 iron you can pick any box on any hole.

I'm still leaning driver, 7, putter but not totally sold. Playing River Islands (golfnow.com for $29) which is a long course but some of the ladies tees provide a HUGE! advantage. But on par threes if you pick a ladies tee your opponent picks the club you use.

I'll hit the range tomorrow and try to figure it out I guess.

Depends on your driver. I don't mind hitting mine off the deck so I usually hit driver, 7, putter. If you go with a 5, then 9, putter.

I hit a driver 320 consistently (not always in the fairway but usually playable) 5 iron 227 is my average. I think I'd only be gaining about 60 yards per hole with a driver. One other golfer is a long hitter but the other two are just really good ball strikers. I get to use my handicap and its the highest (11) of all four. I still see an advantage on a course that long for a driver because I hit a 7 190 and a pw 160.
I'm just screwed regardless if I get in a bunker because I might as well be playing in a wheelchair I'm so bad at it.

227 yard 5-irons? Where are you playing? An airport runway?

Nope. I've always been able to hit the ball a long way. My short game has always been Jekell & Hyde but I also play with 1 degree up and 1" above standard shafts.

I tried out for Krank golf's long drive team but that was humiliating. Those guys hit 400 on the range consistently. I thought that I could compete because I've hit it 400 a couple of times.

Jamie Sadlowski that hits for Adams golf is by far the best to watch. A 5'11" 165 lb guy ripping it 420 with a big smooth swing. I'm trying to incorporate some of his technique in my swing since we're about the same size.

That's just insane to be able to hit a ball that far. I honestly couldn't tell you how far I hit a Driver . . . but it's not remotely in the same zip code as what you are talking about.

Just better technology. Primarily with the shafts. Shaft tech has exploded lately. Ironically the worst decision ever by USGA was the .830 COR. That made all the shaft companies rich with no real way for USGA to backtrack. No long driver will hit any face with the maximum COR because they would cave the face in. They claim the short hitters were getting left behind but they should have left the face alone because it gave the advantage to the slow swingers because fast swingers wouldn't be able to hit those thin faces.

When I am striping it I go from 275-285...randomly if conditions are perfect, and I raelly crank it I'll roll i t290-295....probably average days 250-265 range.

I'm around 285-295.

I can roll one passed 300 on occasion. But it doesn't happen much.

are we talking about how far we can hit it safely in the fairway or how far we can hit it without any kind of control over the ball?
