The "free play" was the one for me...

Milton has the 12th best QBR in the SEC. He is only ahead of UK / Mississippi State / Vandy QB.

He is not a good QB - period. Are his receivers helping him? No. But this year is not the only year he has played. Is it all on him as far as the offense is concerned? Not at all. But watching him play is enough to know . . . He is no good.

He is the team’s best option right now. Looking ahead . . . The real question / conundrum is does the team risk the same next year . . . Because if Nico is not the guy next year (we all hope he is . . . But until a player does it . . . No one really knows), what then? Does Heupel get a QB in the portal for next year?

It was always Milton or bust this year. I suppose Milton could flash here at the end of the year. But there is little evidence to suggest that will happen. All of the 5-1 talk will fade if UT loses to Bama / UGA / Mizzou in the second half of the year.

Is it essentially Nico or bust next year? Probably.

The tale of this season and of Joe Milton will be made in the second half of the season.

First half was absolute cake. Florida is totally beatable and a good Vols team would have cake walked through that game. All other teams have been very beatable and mostly at home with crowd support.

Joe now has to go on the road and prove it. Tough games at Bama UK Mizzou and home against UGA.

This team may only lose to UGA or they may lose 4 of 6 games. It's up to Joe
Agree 100%.

Look I love Milton...hit positive attitude, his leadership...the fact that he stuck around so he could get his shot, all of it. With that said, I realized on the free play where they jumped offsides and he casually ran out of bounds a yard short of the first down that he just does not have what it takes to be a great QB in this offense or even really good. You HAVE to throw that downfield or get the first down. We got stuffed on 3rd down and then failed on 4th and they drive down for a TD and it should have NEVER happened. I could not believe it because that is such a simple play. You have to have more awareness than that and he just...doesn't. I also realize that good or bad this year is his so while I am frustrated I will hope for the best!

Ah, there are others who noticed that, too. I was screaming at my TV. He did it another time in the game. I was screaming at him then, too. To me, that alone is ample proof that Joe just doesn’t have that killer instinct, that competitive fight that makes winners. Imagine Jabari Small in that situation. Or Bru. Or Sampson. Or Wright. Or Jajuan Jennings. Or Hendon Hooker. Either Joe knew where the first-down marker was and just didn’t care…or he didn’t know where it was and didn’t think to look. Either scenario is unacceptable and disturbing. This guy is what…6’4” and 240 lbs? He’s in his sixth year of college football. And he can’t lower his head, speed up and at least fight for every inch he can get?

Yet he’s our QB. We will ride him for the rest of the season, good or bad. He’s an average, serviceable SEC QB. He won’t get drafted but may get a shot as a free agent because of his arm. But he’s ours for now. He’s certainly earned his right to be our guy. He’s paid his dues. But, as I see it, we have to live and game plan within his limitations. And we will have to win some games in spite of his limitations and not because of his play. He’s thrown four picks this year, I believe, and we are still 5-1 in spite of those mistakes. He has some great players around him, which seems to be our saving grace.

It's easy for us to sit and say what Joe could have or should have done. We aren't the ones getting our heads knocked off on the field. We are 5-1. He must be doing something right.
This is just LAZY BRAINED logic.
He threw for 100 yards and 1 TD.

MAYBE our dominant running game and emerging defense as well as Texas A&M being horribly coached had more to do with that win. Same thing for South Carolina.

The more you take the game out of Joe Milton's hands the Higher the team's chance of victory.

That's Heupel doing "something right".
Has jack to do with Joe.....🙄.

Smh.

Couldn’t trust the refs to throw a flag on offsides or false start this game, they were terrible on all sides. I don’t blame him for assuming the refs might pick up the flag or call illegal procedure or something dumb

Don’t think he can process the game fast enough. I think his football IQ is not the best.

He ran out of bounds with no time on the clock and a chance to throw to the endzone against Ole Miss. He doesn't have great situational awareness.

You don’t even need to be an expert in situational awareness to know not to run out of bounds before releasing the ball with no time left. That was one of the worst plays I’ve ever witnessed. God bless him, I hope he decides to put it all together this week.

Question. I thought he made the first down, across field so bad view; he was definitely close to the marker, BUT if he did not make it and was a yard short, why did we not decline the penalty and make it 1 yard short of a first? It was like we took the penalty and it was 3 yards short. That makes no sense. Someone who knows football and the rationale for this please explain. Thanks.
It was 3rd and 8 I think. Was a free play. He ran and went out a yard short. If we take that play it’s 4th and 1 vs accept the penalty and get 3rd and 3.

If the receivers arent open...you want him tossing it downfield?

Remember the last play in the Ole Miss game two years ago?

I think the frustration is that we know he's not going to be able to carry a team like Hooker did. We...well...some of us anyway...recognize that he's just a guy who we need to manage the game not win it, but he's starting to make decisions/plays that, at some point, will begin losing games for us. Even more disturbing is that he's repeating his mistakes instead of learning from them. Great guy, great physical tools, but he doesn't have a mind that can process like good/great quarterbacks have. Folks complain about us not using the entire field, but it's clear this staff recognizes what Milton can and can't do and they're doing all they can to protect him, but as we saw yesterday, there will be times that Milton will be forced to go off script and when he does, there's no telling what will happen. My hope is that there's a game or two where the Joe Milton we saw against Clemson will make an appearance and we steal one we're not supposed to.
And then unicorns will come running over the Hill and save our season.

I was done with him when he ran out of bounds against Ole Miss two years ago. The football IQ is not where it needs to be for a game manager style QB which is unfortunately what he is at this point.

When he casually stepped out a yard short I about lost it.

Love the guy, but he's not a good passer. Hoping coach starts incorporating a bunch more runs with him. He's decent at that.

About ten of us yelled "FREE PLAY! THROW IT!" and then he did... that. Agree with everything you wrote.

We stretch the field horizontally with 3 receivers lined up sideline to sideline. Put 7-8 in the box then you’re choosing to place 3 db’s on an island without any safety help. I’d bet CJH is dreaming for a defense to try that alignment. JMO
I expect to see it next week. Our receivers haven’t been great at getting space. Our QB hasn’t been great at accuracy or decisions. Our running game has been great. Someone eventually will take the chance on the occasional deep ball and stuff the run until Joe proves otherwise.

Didn't a&m just do that? Why would any team not do it? This isn't some new revelation that was just learned last night
No. They didn’t. A&M played fairly balanced all night respecting the pass game for some reason. I think the new revelation for teams is that joe may be regressing, not progressing. Teams will start making joe beat them. I hope he steps up and does it.

No question about it. He just lacks awareness.

I think the bandwagon got heavily loaded on the final play of the Ole Miss game. More stragglers have hopped on due to plays like this since. No, it's obvious that as a 6th year senior under two different top tier staffs, that "situational awareness" ain't happening with Joe. But, he's our guy, so here we go.
Hopefully he can hit enough big plays with his cannon and feet to offset this and allow our defense to win the upcoming big games. Hope ain't a strategy, but he is what he is at this point.
