The fire to win

Have you ever watched some of the greatest coaches and looked in there eyes. Even on TV you can see the fire they have for winning in football. College coaches like Bowden, Paterno, Spurrier, Holtz, yeah and even like woman basketball great Pat Summitt. They would put the fear of God into you with just a glance or a stare, and this got results. They understood the game. That hard work and determination could and would pay off in the end. You never heard them call there players out on tv, that is taken care of in the locker room. They taught respect is earned on the field, not by the name and number on your back. It's all about team work. I have no doubt Derek Dooley is a good man, but a good man and a good coach might win you a district championship. It's not going to win you a National Championship. A great great coach has to have the fire to win, and I just do not see that in Dooley.

I do see the will to win. He has the fire on the sidelines and the look of those guys. He is just missing the coaching ability of the guys you mentioned.

You know there are lots of coaches out there. Some are great, some are good, some are average, some are bad. They all probably work very hard. We just hired one that was average and brought him into a league where you have to be great to survive. We saw his record and it was plain to see what he was. Lots of fans decided to delude themselves for the past three years and that's unfortunate. But, he is what he is. The blame should go on those who made the decision and gave him the job.

I'm pretty sure it's not Holtz's stare that put the fear of God in people. It was the threat of drowning in all that spit.

Along with the will to win you need the skill to win. I've seen countless people attempt something with the best motivation but fail because talent-wise they are just outmatched.

I don't think we are dealing with a skill to win situation on this. On a completely honest introspection, with a better coach we could have easily won 3 of those games and would be staring 10-2 in the face. Reality says that even with a better coach, we still lose at least 1 of those and would be looking at 9-3.

However, we lose all three, get dominated by Bama and Florida and now at best are 7-5. Sometimes it is the coach and his abilities, not the abilities of the players.

With respect intended to the OP, Spurrier throws his guys 'under the bus' all the time. Also, Pat called out her ladies all the time when the effort and expectation wasn't met.

Trashing your guys is weak form. Calling them out for failing to achieve what there capable of is alright by me ... as long as the coach has put them in a position to do so.
